Who We Are

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro has spent eight years developing autonomous driving (AD) technology and commercializing AD applications. The Nuro Driver is our world-class autonomous driving system that combines AD hardware with our generalized AI-first self-driving software. Built to learn and improve through data, the Nuro Driver is one of the few driverless autonomous technologies on public roads today.

Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Fidelity, Bailie Gifford, T. Rowe Price, Google, and other leading investors. We've partnered with some of the world's most respected brands including Uber, FedEx, Domino's, Walmart, Kroger, and 7-Eleven.

About the RoleAs a Senior Systems Engineer, Collision Avoidance Testing, you will work closely with the autonomy software, vehicle hardware, operations, and simulation teams to evaluate the performance of the autonomous vehicle in collision avoidance scenarios. You will be responsible for identifying gaps in on road and simulation tests, designing appropriate tests to fill those gaps, reviewing test outcomes, and iterating on test design. You will analyse the results, suggest product change, and report on residual risk both to leadership and in the safety case.

About the Work
  • Identify and design realistic scenarios to measure residual safety risks and drive test coverage of collision avoidance scenarios and collision detection. scenarios, using both synthetic simulation of third-party accident reconstructions and structured tests.
  • Identify gaps in simulation testing and design structured test scenarios to address these gaps.
  • Support testing against safety assessments and standards by designing appropriate structured tests.
  • Author test and residual risk reports, and make strategic recommendations based on the results for test realism improvements, changes to autonomy architecture, and mitigations.
  • Support the safety case by identifying, documenting, and communicating test realism claims, and deciding when structured testing has sufficiently supported these claims.
  • Communicate effectively in a cross-functional product development team and present risks and requirements effectively.

About You
  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree in Computer Science, Math, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience with both simulation and on-road testing of autonomous vehicles using well-defined metrics to score good driving behavior, with strong algorithmic problem solving skills and Python experience.
  • Experience writing safety claims and system requirements for SAE L3/L4 systems to operate safely.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification and validation, with hands-on experience with STPA and ISO 21448.
  • Highly collaborative in nature with strong abilities to think and communicate analytically and effectively, both verbal and written.
  • Self-starter and fast learner - you should be passionate about picking up new skills and approaching unstructured problems from first principles while prioritizing and managing workload to meet critical project deadlines.
  • 5+ years of technical work experience in a relevant area, of which 3+ years should be in robotics SW.

Bonus Points
  • Familiarity with ISO 8800.
