Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This candidate will partner with the Packaging Engineering team for the design and maintenance of packaging components used in a cGMP regulated diagnostic reagent manufacturing facility. The products are primarily liquids and powders packaged in various container sizes ranging from 1 mL to 20 L. This individual will work with a wide range of materials including glass, PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, corrugate, etc., and ensure the packaging meets all packaging performance and regulatory performance requirements. Additionally, this individual will collaborate with various functions at the site to identify and execute packaging cost saving projects.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Plan and conduct the design and development of new and revised packaging for products under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Develop engineering and manufacturing specifications and ensure compliance to all FDA, ISO, dangerous goods transportation (DOT/IATA) and ISTA regulations under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Contribute to complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Review, test, and evaluate packaging changes made by our customers and suppliers under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, and scientists as needed.
  • Provide technical input into the development and qualification of materials and processes that may include feasibility studies and/or proper documentation for justification of project and training to ensure proper operation of equipment under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and other packaging specifications for procurement under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Work closely with vendors regarding design and development of new packaging and monitor progress to ensure timely implementation of packaging components under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Qualify tooling through FAIs (First Article Inspections) and process capability under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Assist in development of pallet specifications for incoming packaging and outgoing product to maximize warehouse utilization and minimize shipping damage under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Coordinate testing for hazardous material packaging and recertifications under the guidance of the Staff Packaging Engineer.
  • Collaborate with Packaging Team to implement improvements and systems for packaging lab.
  • Learn the technical trends and developments in the packaging industry.
  • Collaborate with purchasing and sourcing to identify and execute packaging cost reduction opportunities.
  • Assist procurement with supplier qualifications.
  • Demonstrate success in a team environment with motivation and willingness to learn for the improvement of the packaging function through team contribution.


Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Science/Engineering required as a new graduate.
  • Internship experience in Packaging related field is preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Business casual office environment.
  • Significant time each day spent in a cGMP manufacturing environment in which designated PPE will be required.
  • Position will require sitting and standing.
  • Employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Hiring Requirements:

  • Familiarity with packaging processes and packaging equipment.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (i.e. Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of packaging software such as TOPS®.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD®, Solid Works®, etc.).
