Responsibilities

Summary:

The Data Center Migration Specialist is a key role responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing the successful migration of data center infrastructure, applications, and services from one location to another (e.g., on-premise to cloud, on-premise to new data center, cloud to cloud). This involves a deep understanding of data center technologies, migration methodologies, project management principles, and risk mitigation strategies. The specialist will work closely with various teams, including network engineers, systems administrators, application developers, and vendors, to ensure a seamless and efficient migration with minimal downtime and disruption to business operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning & Assessment:
    • Conduct thorough assessments of existing data center infrastructure, applications, and dependencies.
    • Develop detailed migration plans, including timelines, resource allocation, and risk mitigation strategies.
    • Define migration waves and prioritize applications based on business criticality.
    • Analyze application performance and identify potential bottlenecks during migration.
    • Collaborate with application owners to understand application requirements and dependencies.
    • Develop rollback plans in case of unforeseen issues.
  • Execution & Implementation:
    • Oversee the physical or virtual migration of servers, storage, network equipment, and other infrastructure components.
    • Coordinate with vendors and third-party providers for hardware procurement, installation, and support.
    • Execute data migration activities, ensuring data integrity and consistency.
    • Configure and test migrated systems and applications in the new environment.
    • Manage and track migration progress, ensuring adherence to the project plan and timelines.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve migration-related issues.
  • Testing & Validation:
    • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans to validate the functionality and performance of migrated systems.
    • Conduct performance testing and identify areas for optimization.
    • Work with application owners to perform user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Post-Migration Support & Optimization:
    • Provide post-migration support and address any issues that arise.
    • Monitor the performance of migrated systems and identify opportunities for optimization.
    • Document the migration process and lessons learned.
    • Contribute to the development of best practices for future migrations.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including IT management, application owners, and business users.
    • Provide regular updates on migration progress and any potential risks or issues.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth and coordinated migration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in data center migrations, including planning, execution, and post-migration support.
  • Deep understanding of data center technologies, including servers, storage, networking, virtualization, and cloud computing.
  • Experience with various migration methodologies and tools.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and manage migration plans, timelines, and budgets.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) is a plus.
  • Certifications in relevant areas (e.g., PMP, ITIL, cloud certifications) are a plus.
  • Experience in Hyper V to VMware conversions

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with specific cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Knowledge of automation tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with ITIL framework.
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning and implementation.

Working Conditions:

  • This role may require working outside of normal business hours, including nights and weekends, to minimize disruption during migrations.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Bachelor's degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
