Job Title : Microsoft Cloud Architect

Location: Town of Herndon, VA, Onsite

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Microsoft Cloud Architect to lead its enterprise cloud modernization initiatives. This critical role is responsible for implementing Microsoft 365 technologies and driving strategic alignment with the Town s IT roadmap.

We are looking for a forward-thinking professional who excels in both technical execution and strategic communication someone capable of translating complex initiatives into clear, compelling deliverables for both technical and non-technical audiences. The ideal candidate will guide cross-departmental projects involving Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, SharePoint Online, Zero Trust security, and Microsoft Defender.

Note:

  • This position requires 100% on-site work initially. Remote flexibility may be available later at the manager s discretion.
  • Candidates must be available for in-person interviews after initial virtual screening. No offers will be made without an in-person meeting.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communication & Leadership Engagement

  • Deliver executive-level briefings using visual roadmaps, dashboards, and milestone charts.
  • Translate technical concepts into plain language for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Present strategic updates during IT Steering Committee and Town Council sessions.
  • Align cloud initiatives with Town priorities, budget plans, and change management efforts.

Technical Implementation & Architecture

  • Configure and manage Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory synchronization, and Microsoft Intune.
  • Lead the deployment and governance of:
    • Zero Trust Security: MFA, Conditional Access, DLP, protocol blocking.
    • Microsoft Defender for Office 365: Secure Score tuning and threat mitigation.
    • SharePoint Online and Teams: Migration, permission models, and onboarding.
  • Ensure technical solutions align with Microsoft best practices and the Town s IT architecture standards.
  • Perform root cause analysis and system optimization.

Change Management & User Adoption

  • Lead change management efforts to drive user adoption of cloud solutions.
  • Develop tailored training programs, communication plans, and department-specific resources.
  • Monitor adoption metrics and refine rollout strategies based on feedback.
  • Anticipate resistance and implement proactive support structures.

Project Coordination & Risk Management

  • Develop project plans, dependency maps, and resource forecasts.
  • Collaborate with project managers to track milestones and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate efforts between internal teams and vendors to ensure seamless delivery.
  • Escalate and mitigate risks to maintain project velocity.

Training, Support & Documentation

  • Facilitate technical onboarding, Q&A forums, and department-specific training.
  • Create job aids, runbooks, and knowledge base documentation.
  • Provide Tier 2/3 support during migrations and major system changes.
  • Ensure long-term sustainability through detailed operational documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in IT engineering/architecture.
  • 4+ years specializing in Microsoft 365, cloud infrastructure, or cybersecurity.
  • Proven ability to combine hands-on implementation with executive-level communications.

Technical Expertise

  • Microsoft Entra ID / Active Directory Connect
