JOB SUMMARY
Plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in work of smaller research project or major unit of large research project in field of specialization for which incumbent is particularly qualified in terms of extensive training and/or experience.

Are you interested in bringing your expertise in computer/data science/electrical engineering to study how neural networks in the brain support learning and memory?

The newly established Program for Memory Longevity (PML), led by Attila Losonczy, MD, PhD,in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, is seeking a full-time Research Scientist. This position will support cutting-edge research on the organization of neural networks in the mammalian hippocampus with an emphasis on both the healthy brain and models of neurogenerative disease. Opportunities to co-author publications, and collaborate with our interdisciplinary team, and attend conferences.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in one of the following areas:
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Data Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Physics
Preferred candidates will have:
  • Strong Programming skills (Python and an understanding of Object-Oriented Programming are a must)
  • Experience with Linux system administration and cloud computing
  • Familiarity with statistical learning, reinforcement learning, or deep learning.
  • Experience in developing custom electronics, microcontroller subsystems (Arduino) or other open source hardware
  • Experience creating and fine-tuning deep learning models
  • Experience with Computer Vision libraries like OpenCV
  • Experience with Image Segmentation Experience with Signal Processing
  • Experience with Matlab Experience troubleshooting ECC errors, and multi-GPU performance issues.
  • Experience troubleshooting custom electronics setups
Primary duties:
  • Assist with the day-to-day operation of the research program.
  • Perform system administration tasks including server maintenance and backups.
  • Manage data storage
  • Oversee GPU computing resources for deep-learning research, from setup to maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain software packages and pipeline for the analysis of functional optical imaging data (e.g. one- and two-photon calcium and voltage imaging)
  • Work closely with other research software engineers to coordinate APIs and wrappers to link the optical imaging analysis suites to other synchronously monitored signals (e.g. electrophysiology or behavioral videography)
  • Work closely with machine learning researchers at PML to incorporate new algorithms into the software packages
  • Perform data processing, integration, and optimization.
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Contribute to collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education
    PhD with major course work in the field of assignment or
    Master's Degree with major course work in the field of assignment or
    Bachelor's Degree with major course work in the field of assignment
  • Experience
    5 years of research experience in the field of assignment with PhD including
    2 years at the level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent or
    7 years of research experience in the field of assignment with Master's degree including
    3 years at the level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent or
    9 years of research experience in the field of assignment with Bachelor's degree including
    4 years Level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent.
JOB DUTIES
  • Plans, organizes coordinates, directs, and personally participates in assigned scientific or medical research project. Selects or assists in selection of key research personnel. Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained. Assigns and reviews work of subordinates. Plans experimental protocols.
  • Reviews and analyzes resulting research data. Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data.
  • Compiles, writes, and submits research results to supervisor. Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.
  • Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Supervises group of employees of lower grade engaged in performance of technical and professional work, which vary from routine to complex laboratory work tasks.
  • May confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
