ENGINEER or SCIENTIST

Summary

You will serve as an ENGINEER OR SCIENTIST in the PLATFORM INTEGRITY DEPT (C/60), MATERIALS & MANUFACTURNG TECH DIV (C/61), NON METALLIC MATL'S R&E BRANCH (C/617) of CARDEROCK DIV NS.

This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The ND-5 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-14 and GS-15.

Duties

Help

• You will be responsible for guiding the development of polymeric rubber materials and material processing technologies that have application for ship, submarine, combatant craft, and uncrewed systems.
• You will serve as lead engineer or scientist for polymeric material property modeling, polymeric material measurement methodologies, and polymeric material development.
• You will serve as the Navy's expert and Team Lead in the subject area of polymeric materials and their integration in Navy ship, submarine, and combatant craft platforms.
• You will develop and lead a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians that executes scientific and engineering projects to improve polymeric rubber materials for Navy assets.
• You will apply knowledge of engineering theories, concepts, and procedures related to non-metallic polymeric and rubber material.
• You will plan, organize, and coordinate the various phases of the project assignment to be accomplished.
• You will carry full responsibilities for polymeric material applied research; T and E of equipment and systems; experimental development of instrumentation, techniques, processes, materials and equipment and/or In-service engineering functions.
• You will document work including preparation of proposals, technical reports, specifications, work plans, or project reviews.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalency) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer or scientist overseeing the research and development of materials processing technologies to support naval surface ship or undersea systems.

• Degree: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university; OR a degree with curriculum in differential and integral calculus, with additional courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics; OR
• Substitution of Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Substitution of Education/Experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
