Job Title: Mid-Level Google Cloud Engineer

Location: Mason, OH (5 Days a Week, No Remote Options)

LOA: 3-6m Contract to Hire

Start: ASAP

Background & Role Purpose

Two years ago, our client migrated our SAP instance to Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform) in just nine months without prior Google Cloud Platform expertise, only the knowledge that Google could host in the cloud. The migration was largely a lift-and-shift, and while it achieved its goal quickly, many components were not built using Google Cloud Platform best practices.

Since then, our client s direction has been clear: move to the cloud wherever it makes sense. Google Cloud Platform is now our preferred platform, but its initial setup has created challenges for scalability, security, and governance. Some projects have been spun up without oversight, and our Cloud Governance Team is now tasked with restructuring Google Cloud Platform to align with best practices.

To achieve this, we are building a Cloud Governance team and hiring dedicated experts including Cloud Architects and security-focused cloud engineers who will ensure our cloud environment is structured correctly and securely from the ground up. This role will not require deep security specialization but will demand Google Cloud Platform Security Engineer certification and strong, hands-on Google Cloud Platform expertise to support secure, compliant, and scalable operations.

Position Overview

Our client seeking a Mid-Level Google Cloud Engineer to join their new Cloud Governance team. This role will focus on re-architecting and optimizing our Google Cloud Platform environment for long-term stability, security, and scalability. You will collaborate with architects, security engineers, and operations teams to design and implement solutions following Google Cloud Platform best practices ensuring governance and security considerations are baked into every project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Cloud Architects and the security team to redesign Google Cloud Platform infrastructure for best practices.
  • Deploy and manage Google Cloud Platform services (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud SQL, IAM, VPCs, etc.) with a focus on secure, governed implementations.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Deployment Manager) for reproducible and compliant environments.
  • Review and remediate existing Google Cloud Platform resources to align with governance and security standards.
  • Collaborate with developers to build secure CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native applications.
  • Ensure IAM roles, service accounts, and policies adhere to least-privilege principles.
  • Support ongoing cloud security monitoring and incident response (not as a security SME but with strong Google Cloud Platform security awareness).
  • Maintain documentation of standards, patterns, and architectures.

Qualifications Required:

  • 3 5 years of hands-on Google Cloud Platform experience.
  • Google Cloud Platform Professional Cloud Security Engineer certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
  • Proficiency in Terraform, Cloud SDK, and Google Cloud Platform console.
  • Solid knowledge of IAM, VPC design, networking, and security best practices.
  • Experience with Kubernetes (GKE), Docker, and CI/CD tooling.
  • Strong scripting skills (Python, Bash, or similar).

Plus:

  • Experience with governance and compliance frameworks (CIS, NIST, ISO).
  • Exposure to multi-cloud or hybrid environments.
  • Familiarity with data services (BigQuery, Dataflow).

Soft Skills

  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills.
  • Analytical problem-solver who can work in ambiguous environments.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on operational excellence.
