RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce's client in Draper, UT is seeking a Principal Linux Engineer to take full ownership of their enterprise Linux environment across on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
Summary:
Working alongside other principal-level engineers, you will be the most senior Linux specialist on the team. This is a hands-on role focused on standardizing, automating, and securing the Linux fleet. Architecture experience is a plus, but this is not an architecture or leadership role - it's about solving problems, improving infrastructure, and getting things done.
The current Linux environment is inconsistent and lacks automation-you'll lead the charge in bringing order, security, and scalability. As a Principal Linux Engineer, you'll manage 50+ servers, supporting both on-prem and cloud (Azure) workloads. You will be the Linux expert on the principal engineering team, working alongside junior Linux admins and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
* Execute Linux Fleet Standardization: Build consistent, secure, and scalable server configurations across all environments
* Implement Security & Patch Controls: Own vulnerability management, patching processes, and enforcement of security best practices using tools like Tanium, Tenable, and Statlite
* Drive Automation: Automate provisioning, patching, and system updates using tools like Ansible, Terraform, and Bash scripting
* Support Hybrid Infrastructure: Operate in both on-prem and Azure environments
* Work Cross-Functionally: Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, and security teams while also mentoring and supporting junior Linux administrators
* Build Documentation: Create and maintain detailed process and configuration documentation to support long-term sustainability
REQUIREMENTS:
* Enterprise Linux Experience: 7-10+ years managing 50+ Linux servers in production (Red Hat, Ubuntu, or similar), preferably in enterprise environments
* Hands-On Execution: Proven track record of executing infrastructure improvements, not just designing them
* Automation Proficiency: Deep experience with Terraform, Ansible, and custom scripting (Bash required; Python is a plus)
* Security & Patching: Strong understanding of Linux system hardening, vulnerability remediation, and patch management tools
* Cloud Exposure: Required experience managing Linux in cloud environments. Azure preferred, AWS considered
* Self-Starter Mentality: Must be able to work independently, identify gaps, take initiative, and drive improvements with minimal supervision
* Collaboration Skills: Comfortable mentoring junior staff and working across teams to align with broader infrastructure goals
Preferred:
* Familiarity with Oracle on Linux, clustered environments, and integration with Exadata in cloud or hybrid setups
* Knowledge of Active Directory integration for Linux systems
* Experience building knowledge base articles and internal documentation
* Vision for long-term Linux infrastructure improvement, though initial focus is entirely on hands-on execution
If you're a self-starter with deep Linux expertise, strong automation skills, and a passion for hands-on execution, this is an opportunity to bring meaningful change to a dynamic infrastructure team and build something sustainable from the ground up.
The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
Note: Pay is not considered compensation until it is earned, vested and determinable. The amount and availability of any compensation remains in Kforce's sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified in its discretion consistent with the law.
This job is not eligible for bonuses, incentives or commissions.
