About the Role:
A Fortune 10 company is seeking a Systems Engineer II to support its Kindle Reader team, focused on delivering seamless reading experiences across multiple platforms including Android, iOS, Fire OS, and Kindle e-readers. The engineer will work directly with infrastructure operations, automation tools, and lab device management in a fast-paced, high-scale environment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and manage Linux/Unix systems in a datacenter/lab environment.
  • Perform device farm activities such as firmware updates, reboots, flashing corrupted devices, device setup, and inventory tracking.
  • Troubleshoot root-level hardware/software issues.
  • Automate monitoring and management workflows using Python, Perl, and shell scripts.
  • Manage configuration systems and device readiness across multiple platforms.
  • Support special testing projects and coordinate infrastructure/networking needs with internal IT teams.
  • Drive operational efficiency through proactive problem solving and automation.
  • Monitor system and device health metrics; document and report malfunctions.
Must-Have Skills (Top 3):
  1. Operating Systems: Strong hands-on experience with Linux/Unix and Mac OS.
  2. Networking Protocols: Deep understanding of Ethernet, ARP, IP, ICMP, UDP, TCP, SSL, DNS, HTTP, etc.
  3. Automation Scripting: Proficiency in Python scripting (and/or Perl, Bash).
Core Requirements:
  • 2-4 years of experience managing and troubleshooting systems in production or lab environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem analysis capabilities.
  • Familiarity with internet protocols and infrastructure operations.
  • SQL experience - ability to build and execute queries.
  • Demonstrated grasp of security best practices in tool development, access control, and system configuration.
  • Passion for frugality and creative, out-of-the-box engineering solutions.
Highly Desirable Skills:
  • Experience with C, C++, or Java.
  • Version control systems (Git, Mercurial, SVN).
  • Understanding of AWS cloud services.
  • Experience managing large-scale, geographically distributed server environments.
  • Familiarity with enterprise switching/routing platforms and large-scale disk subsystems.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certifications related to Linux, scripting, or AWS are a plus.
