Role: Sr. PKI Engineer
Location: South San Francisco, CA

Duration: 6-8 months Contract to Hire

Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer with strong hands-on experience in PKI (Private Key Infrastructure), VMware virtualization, and enterprise backup systems. The role will focus on migrating from a legacy Certificate Authority to a new PKI, consolidating multiple vCenter environments into a single vCenter, and reconfiguring backup jobs to align with the new infrastructure architecture. This role requires deep production-level experience and close collaboration with security, network, and operations teams.


Key Responsibilities

PKI & Security Infrastructure

Lead migration from legacy Certificate Authority (CA) to a new PKI infrastructure

Support certificate-based authentication using 802.1X

Integrate and troubleshoot RADIUS and Microsoft NPS servers

Manage certificate lifecycle, validation, and security best practices

Ensure minimal downtime and proper rollback planning during PKI cutover

VMware & Virtualization

Administer and consolidate VMware vCenter environments (3 → 1)

Plan and execute vCenter migrations with minimal business impact

Manage ESXi hosts, clusters, datastores, and VM migrations

Coordinate with dependent teams during infrastructure changes

Backup & Recovery

Reconfigure and optimize backup jobs post-architecture changes

Ensure backup coverage, retention, and restore testing

Work with enterprise backup tools such as Veeam, Commvault, NetBackup, or Avamar

Maintain DR readiness and documentation

Systems & Operations

Administer Windows Server infrastructure (AD, DNS, GPO, CA)

Perform infrastructure planning, documentation, and change management

Collaborate with security, networking, and application teams

Provide L3 support for infrastructure-related issues

Required Skills & Qualifications


Mandatory Skills

Strong experience with PKI and Certificate Authority migrations

Hands-on knowledge of 802.1X, RADIUS, and Microsoft NPS

VMware vCenter administration and consolidation experience

Enterprise backup and recovery reconfiguration experience

Windows Server & Active Directory administration


Nice to Have

PowerShell scripting and automation

DR planning and restore testing

Experience in multi-site enterprise environments

ITIL / Change Management exposure

VMware or Microsoft certifications
