Job Title : Power BI Architect / lead / developer
Location : Boston MA | Hybrid
Duration : Long Term Contract
Job Description:
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Strategy
- Design and own the Power BI architecture, including datasets, dataflows, semantic models, and deployment pipelines
- Define best practices, standards, and governance for Power BI development and usage
- Ensure solutions are scalable, performant, and aligned with enterprise data strategy
Development & Delivery
- Lead development of complex Power BI reports and dashboards
- Build and optimize DAX measures, calculated tables, and Power Query transformations
- Design star schemas and semantic models optimized for analytics
- Implement row-level security (RLS) and manage workspace permissions
Leadership & Collaboration
- Act as technical lead for Power BI initiatives
- Mentor and review work of junior BI developers
- Partner with data engineers, architects, and business stakeholders
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions
Performance & Optimization
- Troubleshoot and resolve performance issues in reports and datasets
- Optimize refresh strategies, storage modes, and data models
- Monitor usage and adoption metrics
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years in BI / analytics development
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with Power BI
- Strong expertise in:
- DAX
- Power Query (M)
- Data modeling (star/snowflake schemas)
- Experience with SQL Server, Azure SQL, or other relational databases
- Experience integrating Power BI with:
- Azure Synapse
- Azure Data Factory
- Databricks (preferred)
- Strong understanding of security, governance, and deployment pipelines
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-facing skills
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Microsoft certifications (PL-300, DP-500, or equivalent)
- Experience with Power BI Premium / Fabric
- Experience in regulated or enterprise environments
- Knowledge of Python, R, or advanced analytics
- Experience defining BI CoE (Center of Excellence) practices
Tools & Technologies
- Power BI (Desktop, Service, Premium)
- SQL Server / Azure SQL
- Azure Data Services
- Git / DevOps CI/CD pipelines
- Microsoft Fabric (a plus)
