JOB DESCRIPTION

Apex is seeking a Lead AWS Architect to own end-to-end delivery of a data-center exit: Assess the portfolio, mobilize foundations and operating model, and Migrate workloads through wave execution to decommission. You will design the landing zone, define 7R dispositions, lead the migration factory, run cutovers/rollback, and ensure stabilization, FinOps, and security compliance at scale.

RESPONSIBLITIES

Assess (Portfolio & Readiness)
  • Run Migration Portfolio Assessment (MPA) and Migration Readiness Assessment (CAF: Business, People, Governance, Platform, Security, Operations).
  • Build dependency maps, NFRs, RTO/RPO targets, data residency and compliance requirements.
  • Create 7R dispositions and wave plan with business case/TCO and risk register.


Mobilize (Foundations & Operating Model)
  • Design and implement the multi-account Landing Zone (AWS Organizations, Control Tower, SCPs, account vending, IAM Identity Center).
  • Architect hybrid networking (VPCs, TGW, DX/VPN, hybrid DNS, PrivateLink) and baseline security (KMS, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config, detective/preventive controls).
  • Stand up platform operations: monitoring/observability, logging, backup/DR (AWS Backup, DRS), patching, incident/change mgmt.
  • Define IaC and CI/CD standards (Terraform/CloudFormation; GitHub/GitLab/Code*).
  • Establish FinOps guardrails (tagging, budgets, chargeback/showback, RI/SP strategy).


Migrate (Execution & Decommission)
  • Stand up and lead a migration factory: wave room cadence, runbooks, change windows, go/no[1]go, backout.
  • Select and operate tooling: AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) for servers, DMS/SCT for databases, DataSync/Transfer Family, Snowball for large data, Migration Hub/Orchestrator for tracking.
  • Execute patterns across tech stacks.
  • Drive testing (functional, performance, failover, security), cutover & rollback, and hypercare stabilization.
  • Coordinate coexistence with remaining on-prem systems (file transfer, messaging, latency constraints).
  • Define and enforce decommission criteria, certificates/disposition of hardware/licenses, CMDB updates.
  • Continuous cost, reliability, and performance optimization post-migration.


JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 8+ years cloud/infra; 5+ years leading multi-workload AWS migrations including practical wave execution and cutovers.
  • Proven data-center exit program leadership (hundreds of servers/apps or petabyte-scale data).
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including project managers and vendors.
  • Deep expertise in:
  • Landing Zone & governance (Organizations, Control Tower, SCPs, IAM, KMS).
  • Networking (VPC/TGW, DX/VPN, hybrid DNS, PrivateLink, SG/NACL design).
  • Compute/containers (EC2, ASG, LT; ECS/EKS incl. ingress, autoscaling, blue/green).
  • Serverless (API Gateway, Lambda, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Step Functions).
  • Data migration (RDS/Aurora, DMS/SCT, DataSync, Snowball; backup/restore, DR).
  • Observability & ops (CloudWatch/X-Ray/CloudTrail/Config, Systems Manager).
  • IaC/CI-CD (Terraform or CloudFormation; GitHub/GitLab/CodePipeline).
  • Strong stakeholder management and program-level risk/issue/change control.
  • AWS SA-Professional plus Security-Specialty or Advanced Networking preferred.
  • Experience with migrations of Windows/.NET (IIS ? containers/serverless) and Java platforms preferred.
  • Experrience with Legacy DB migrations (DB2/SQL Server/Oracle) and license optimization preferred.
  • Experience with Data residency/regulatory workloads preferred.
  • Prior consulting/partner leadership on large multi-tower programs preferred.
