Job Posting: Static Web Developer
Project: Website Modernization Initiative aligned with new CLF Standards
DelDOT is embarking on an exciting initiative to rewrite and modernize our websites, and we're looking for a talented Static Web Developer to play a key role in this transformation. This is an opportunity to work with new standards, including the recently introduced Design System, to deliver accessible, user-centric, and high-performing websites for the citizens of Delaware.
You will be instrumental in transitioning our existing web properties, some of which currently utilize Angular and React, to modern static site architectures. This will involve leveraging the Design System's reusable components and adhering to the highest standards of web development, accessibility, and performance.
About the Design System:
Lighthouse is the State of Delaware's new vision for its digital experiences, serving as the latest iteration of the Common Look and Feel (CLF) guidelines. It's a comprehensive design system built to:
- Provide a consistent and trustworthy user experience across all state agency websites.
- Ensure WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility (at a minimum) for all users.
- Offer a suite of reusable HTML components and design patterns (available via Storybook and Figma) to streamline development.
- Promote efficient build and maintenance processes.
- Enhance the ease of content management and page layout creation.
What You'll Do:
- Develop and implement new static websites based on the design system and its component library.
- Rewrite and migrate content and functionality from existing websites (including WordPress sites) to new static site generator frameworks.
- Collaborate closely with UI/UX designers, content strategists, and other stakeholders to translate design mockups and requirements into functional, responsive, and accessible web pages.
- Ensure all web development adheres to the new standards, including HTML5, CSS3, Responsive Web Design (RWD), and accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA, ADA, Section 508).
- Optimize websites for speed, performance, and SEO.
- Integrate with backend systems or APIs as needed; this may include leveraging a headless CMS for content management where appropriate.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to a collaborative development environment.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging web technologies, static site generation best practices, and accessibility standards.
- Troubleshoot and resolve website issues.
What We're Looking For:
- Proven experience as a Web Developer with a strong portfolio showcasing static website projects.
- Proficiency in modern front-end technologies: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+).
- Experience with one or more popular content management systems (e.g., Eleventy, Hugo, Jekyll, Next.js, Gatsby, Astro).
- Experience working on projects with strict accessibility and design standards.
- Knowledge of Bootstrap, Angular, and similar CSS frameworks (note: familiarity with common frameworks is helpful).
- Awareness of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and experience building accessible websites.
- Familiarity with design systems and component-based development; experience with Storybook and Figma is a plus.
- Experience with WordPress, Angular and React, and other CMS platforms.
- Knowledge of Responsive Web Design principles and mobile-first development.
- Understanding of version control systems, preferably Git.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills. 1
- A commitment to creating high-quality, user-focused digital experiences.
