Please NO 3rd Parties! We have a current opportunity for a AI Engineer on a contract basis. The position will be based in New York but can be worked fully remote. For further information about this position please apply. The AI Engineer will be a key member of the Information Technology (IT) unit, responsible for managing and expanding the client's AI chatbots and related AI systems. This role bridges technical AI expertise with legal services to enhance our ability to serve clients efficiently and effectively. NO 3rd Parties!



Hybrid or Remote:


Remote schedule, local presence in NYC metro area required for occasional onsite meetings with the team.


Shift & Schedule:


This position offers a 20-hour work week, asking for availability between 9-5pm EST.



Responsibilities:


Prompt Engineering & Chatbot Management


Focus: Designing, refining, and managing AI chatbot interactions.



  • Develop, test, and refine prompts for AI chatbots to ensure they provide accurate, helpful, and ethical responses in legal contexts

  • Manage existing AI chatbots, monitoring performance and implementing improvements

  • Document AI prompting strategies, templates, and best practices


AI Infrastructure & System Operations


Focus: Technical implementation and maintenance of AI tools and platforms.



  • Run and maintain open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) in local environments using Docker

  • Develop and test AI solutions to business needs

  • Implement safeguards to ensure client confidentiality and data security


Collaboration, Training & Support


Focus: Bridging the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders.



  • Collaborate with staff to understand their needs and translate them into effective AI solutions

  • Train and orient staff on using AI prompts in safe, ethical, policy compliant manner

  • Train and support non-technical staff on effective AI system use

  • Complete special projects and ad hoc assignments, as required by a practice or IT leadership


Quality Assurance, Ethics & Alignment


Focus: Ensuring AI tools meet organizational standards for accuracy, fairness, and mission alignment.



  • Evaluate AI model outputs for accuracy, bias, and alignment with mission and values

  • Stay current with developments in AI, prompt engineering, and legal technology



Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related field

  • 1+ years of experience with AI systems, prompt engineering, or natural language processing

  • Demonstrated experience with prompt engineering for large language models

  • Working knowledge of Docker and containerization technologies

  • Basic understanding of legal terminology and processes

  • Strong ethical judgment regarding AI implementation and data privacy

  • Proficiency in crafting effective prompts for AI systems to produce desired outputs

  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Experience in project planning and management

  • Problem-solving mindset and attention to detail

  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies

  • Interpersonal and communication skills that enable healthy and productive working relationships.

  • Ability to perform duties with the highest regard for confidentiality, integrity, and respect.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with legal technology or AI applications in legal settings

  • Familiarity with open-source LLMs (such as Llama, Mistral, etc.)

  • Knowledge of Python programming language

  • Experience with version control systems (Git)

  • Understanding of responsible AI principles and bias mitigation
