API Gateway Engineer (Kong)
Fort Mill, SC (Hybrid: 3 Days Onsite, 2 Days Remote)
We are looking for a highly skilled API Gateway Engineer with hands-on expertise in Kong API Gateway to join our team in Fort Mill, SC. This is a Contract-to-Hire role, offering an exciting chance to work on cutting-edge API management, integration, and automation in a hybrid setup.
Key Responsibilities:
- API Gateway Management - Deploy, configure, and manage Kong API Gateway across on-prem, cloud, and hybrid environments.
- API Development & Integration - Design and implement APIs, custom plugins, and orchestrations with backend services.
- Security & Performance - Enforce API security policies (OAuth2, JWT, mTLS), optimize performance, and ensure high availability.
- Monitoring & Troubleshooting - Use tools like Dynatrace/ELK for proactive monitoring and issue resolution.
- Collaboration & Documentation - Work with cross-functional teams and maintain detailed API and system documentation.
- Automation & Best Practices - Support CI/CD, automate deployments, and apply API management best practices with Terraform.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience with Kong API Gateway (architecture, functionalities, plugin development).
- Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs, OpenAPI specs, OIDC, microservices architecture.
- Proficiency in Lua/Python scripting and DevOps tools (Git, Git Actions, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/Google Cloud Platform) and API security standards (OAuth, OIDC, Auth0).
- Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Certifications in Kong or related API technologies.
- Experience with API testing tools (Postman, JMeter, Insomnia).
- Familiarity with IBM DataPower/Websphere MQ.
- Experience with Confluence documentation.
