Description
The Data Center Critical Environment Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of critical infrastructure across a data center campus. This includes electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and control systems in both large-capacity facilities and smaller satellite locations. The technician ensures uptime, supports incident response, and upholds a strong safety culture while working independently and collaboratively.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment and Systems Operations
Perform routine rounds and initial assessments of equipment performance with varying levels of supervision.
Operate and monitor critical systems (e.g., electrical, mechanical, HVAC, fire/life safety) using telemetry and control platforms.
Conduct inspections and validations of equipment and escalate issues per established procedures.
Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track assets, complete work orders, and document changes.
Respond to abnormal conditions using emergency operating procedures (EOPs) and participate in incident investigations and documentation.
Equipment and Systems Maintenance
Execute planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance tasks across trained disciplines following MOPs, SOPs, DMOPs, and safety protocols.
Troubleshoot equipment and system issues independently and escalate complex problems as needed.
Escort and coordinate third-party contractors and vendors, ensuring compliance with safety and procedural standards.
Review and approve vendor documentation and escalate concerns when necessary.
Prepare and submit maintenance reports and contribute to the development of procedural documentation.
Support and coach junior technicians on technical and procedural tasks.
Electrical Infrastructure Support
Support electrical infrastructure across the data center campus, including Remote Power Panel (RPP) shutdowns, Power Distribution Unit (PDU) maintenance, and Power Interruption Testing (PIT).
Perform master controller shutdowns or replacements and ensure critical loads remain supported.
Utilize and maintain Building Management Systems (EPMS).
Apply a fundamental understanding of the National Electrical Code in daily operations.
Preferred: Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) certification.
Required: OSHA or OSHA-approved NFPA 70E Certification.
Critical Environment Culture
Adhere to all safety and security protocols, including job hazard assessments (JHAs), toolbox talks, and applicable regulations.
Maintain a proactive safety culture by identifying and responding to unsafe conditions and escalating concerns immediately.
Participate in required safety meetings, trainings, and handoffs.
Ensure safe working conditions for self and others and support environmental health and safety (EHS) objectives.
Physical Requirements
(Applicable to U.S.-based Data Center roles)
Occasional climbing of ladders.
Frequent climbing of stairs and/or ramps.
Prolonged standing.
Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. / 22.5 kg.
Occasional pushing or pulling of 50-75 lbs. / 22.5-34 kg with assistive devices.
Normal visual acuity (near, far, and peripheral with correction).
Normal color vision required for electrical work.

Qualifications:
Required: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Required: 5+ years of work or applied learning experience in technical fields (e.g., automotive, electrical, controls, data center).
Required: OSHA or OSHA-approved NFPA 70E Certification.
Required: Experience with electrical systems in high-availability environments such as data centers, hospitals, refineries, manufacturing, or similar.
Required: Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).
Required: Ability to work flexible schedules including 12-hour shifts, rotating shifts, and varied work weeks.
Preferred: Previous data center experience.
Preferred: Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) certification.
Preferred: Familiarity with Building Management Systems (EPMS) and power infrastructure testing procedures.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $43.00 - $48.00/hr.
