Job Details
The Data Center Technician assists in the daily operations of FERC's data center and communication closets, ensuring efficient and reliable system functioning. This role involves supporting data center operations as part of a small team while collaborating with other teams, maintaining high IT system availability and performance, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Over time, this role will expand into infrastructure system administration, supporting servers (Windows and RHEL), VMware virtualization, Storage Area Network (SAN), Data Recovery, and more.
- Assist with data center operations, including technical operations, facility management, and security compliance.
- Help with system installations, upgrades, repairs, maintenance, and equipment excessing.
- Develop and follow data center processes and procedures.
- Monitor environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, etc.) and ensure they are within specified limits.
- Support disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity procedures, including participating in DR exercises.
- Oversee communication closets within FERC HQ, ensuring proper maintenance and security.
- Create and maintain an asset inventory for all locations and consumables.
- Ensure all documentation related to data center operations are up to date.
- Monitor SolarWinds alerts and take corrective actions as needed.
- Travel to remote sites as required to support operations.
- Assist with the installation and relocation of equipment during core and non-core business hours.
- Expand into infrastructure system administration, including supporting servers (Windows and RHEL), VMware virtualization, Storage Area Networking (SAN), Data Recovery, and other systems.
- This role is on-site five (5) days a week at FERC headquarters in Washington, DC.
Minimum Qualifications
- with a Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent relevant experience.
- 5-10 years overall related experience in planning, developing, documenting, and executing a configuration management and change control program; with 4 years of experience in configuration identification, including establishing Security, Functional, Allocated, and Product Baselines; Configuration Control; Configuration Status Accounting; and Physical Configuration Audits; evaluating drawings, manuals, and training documentation.
- Basic knowledge of data center operations, systems development, data management, and network administration.
