Job Title: Database Admin (IBM iSeries)

Location: Remote work

Type: Contract to Hire

Rate: $Best Possible

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact and lead support associate for critical platform components, resolving customer issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with product owners and technical/business leaders to manage the end-to-end operations of the Application/Data Platform as a Service.
  • Participate in capacity planning, disaster recovery, and high-availability planning efforts.
  • Recommend observability standards and enable platform monitoring through logging and alerting.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, working with cross-functional teams to perform detailed problem analysis.
  • Review and optimize SQL queries and analyze poorly performing processes in production, including CPU usage and plan cache.
  • Execute data fixes and assist with overnight database deployments.
  • Stay current with industry advancements and perform research on new platform features, versions, and related technologies. Provide recommendations for platform improvements.
  • Document standard operating procedures, create run books, and assign/review tasks for junior or offshore engineers.
  • Participate in the interview process for new hires.
  • Provide clear and accurate reporting to management on project progress and issues.
  • Foster stable working relationships within the organization and across teams.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in software development or system administration.
  • 8-10 years of experience with IBM i server administration and DB2 for i platform (DB2/400) required (client flexible with years of IBM i experience - willing to take less experience)
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with DB2 for i as a database administrator (DBA).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with relational database management systems (RDBMS) and OLTP/OLAP concepts.
  • Proficiency in IBM i navigation, including ACS, Schemas, Run SQL, plan cache, stored procedures, and creating user-defined functions (UDFs).
  • Strong skills in writing complex SQL queries, including joins, sub-selects, and with statements.
  • Proven experience managing high-volume, high-velocity application/data environments.
  • Familiarity with build management and continuous integration tools is a plus.
  • Understanding of DevOps concepts and Agile software development methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a professional demeanor and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong aptitude and willingness to learn new technologies and concepts.
  • Ability to estimate and plan medium to large-sized platform activities.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required for this role.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and work within specified schedules and locations.
