Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary team of 120 engineers, scientists, and technicians. ATS has been providing technology-based innovative, high-value services to the company for over 40 years. The Electrical Testing and Project Support Unit provides a range of electrical testing and analysis services in support of Power Generation (Hydro, Fossil, and Nuclear), Electrical Transmission and Distribution, and Gas Transmission and Distribution activities.

The Mechanical Engineering Services (MES) Unit provides a range of mechanical testing, analysis, and inspection services to Power Generation (Hydro, Fossil, and Nuclear), Electrical Transmission and Distribution, and Gas Transmission and Distribution. MES work includes performing plant condition and performance assessments, state of the art predictive maintenance applications, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modeling of power plant components, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling and laboratory stress-strain measurements and analysis. Our engineers and technicians have extensive experience providing testing support for PG&E hydroelectric powerhouse startup, commissioning and troubleshooting activities. Additionally, the team provides acoustic and vibration analysis on a wide range of applications.

Position Summary

This position is represented by the Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining.

This position has a primary focus on field testing of mechanical systems and components for all PG&E Assets, including but not limited to All Types of Machinery, Substation Equipment, Buildings, Dams, Water Systems, Gas Compressors and Pipelines, Transmission and Distribution Equipment, etc. Much of the testing will be out in the field. Office/Lab work includes data analysis, data reporting, planning for emergent or ongoing work, equipment and procedure development and maintenance.

Travel Required: 50-80% of the time.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the hourly rate range for this position is $56.94 to $63.03, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.

Responsibilities
  • Hydro Condition Assessment: Provide technical support for engineering staff to evaluate the ability for each hydro-electric power facility to safely shut down and measure the relative change in efficiency of hydro-electric power facilities after major upgrades. Requires on-site set up, testing, monitoring, and reporting of vibration, pressure, temperature, motion, power, and flow. The work will require acquiring and evaluating data and preparing a report.
  • Mechanical Testing & Analysis: Perform product, component, material strength and durability testing. Meeting testing requirements outlined in PG&E procedures, ASTM and ANSI Standards. Develop test plan, data formatting, review and report writing.
  • Instrumentation repair and calibration: Responsible for maintaining all field instrumentation, transducers, cabling and data acquisition systems to ensure reliability for field testing.

Qualifications

Minimum:
  • AA Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines or its equivalent in education and experience
  • 2 years of experience testing mechanical systems, instrumentation and transducers for measuring speed, force, displacement, pressure, temperature, flow, strain voltage and current

Desired:
  • BS in STEM discipline
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Experience with machinery alignment and setup
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand schematics and blueprints
  • Experience with Electrical/Electronic Troubleshooting, Fabrication and/or design.
  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft office suite with emphasis on Excel and data presentation
  • Ability to work independently in the field at PG&E or customer facilities. This includes extensive travel, and some physically demanding work (climbing, lifting, etc.)
  • Valid CA driver's license
