Job Details

A heavy civil contractor specializing in large-scale excavation, roadway development, and transportation infrastructure is seeking an Excavation Foreman to lead field crews on highway, bridge, and DOT-driven projects across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. Most projects are located within 60 miles of the employee's home base, providing consistent regional work. This role includes a company vehicle and full union benefits.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise daily excavation and earthwork operations to ensure safety, quality, and production standards are met or exceeded.
  • Lead crews in accordance with OSHA, MSHA, and company safety programs; conduct daily safety talks and enforce compliance.
  • Interpret and review plans, specifications, grades, and staking to ensure excavation and sitework meet DOT and engineering requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with Superintendents, survey teams, subcontractors, and trucking partners to maintain schedule, budget, and productivity targets.
  • Manage project documentation including daily reports, quantity tracking, extra work forms, and cost coding in HCSS HeavyJob.
  • Oversee equipment utilization for excavators, dozers, scrapers, haul trucks, and compaction equipment; promptly report maintenance needs.
  • Provide hands-on training, mentorship, and performance guidance to crew members while fostering strong team culture and adherence to company policies.
  • Ensure all materials, equipment, traffic control, and site logistics are in place to support uninterrupted field operations.

Qualifications:
  • Field experience in heavy civil construction with emphasis on highway/bridge excavation, roadway cuts/fills, grading, embankment construction, and utility trenching.
  • Strong understanding of heavy equipment operation, mass excavation sequencing, and production/cost tracking.
  • 30-Hour OSHA certification, MSHA certification, and First Aid/CPR training required or willingness to obtain.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and time management skills with a practical, hands-on problem-solving approach.
  • Ability to travel regionally across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, with most assignments within 60 miles of the employee's home base.
  • Eligibility for company vehicle and union benefits provided with the role.
