Job Title: System Administrator (Jr./Mid)

Location: City Hall, Buffalo, NY

Employment Type: Full-Time

Job Summary:

The System Administrator (Junior/Mid-Level) will support and maintain the City Hall IT infrastructure, ensuring the availability, security, and performance of servers, systems, and user environments. This role focuses on Windows-based administration, system monitoring, user support, and automation using PowerShell, while working closely with senior administrators and the Help Desk team.

Key Responsibilities

System Administration

  • Administer and support Windows Server environments, including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and file/print services.
  • Perform routine system monitoring, backups, patching, and performance tuning.
  • Automation & Scripting
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate administrative tasks, reporting, and system maintenance.
  • Assist in automating user provisioning, access management, and system health checks.

User & Application Support

  • Provide Tier 2 support for system-related incidents and service requests.
  • Troubleshoot server, application, and authentication issues escalated from the Help Desk.
  • Support deployment and maintenance of enterprise applications and system updates.

Security & Compliance

  • Assist in implementing security best practices, including access controls, password policies, and system hardening.
  • Support vulnerability remediation, patch compliance, and audit requirements in a government IT environment.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Create and maintain system documentation, SOPs, and operational runbooks.
  • Work collaboratively with infrastructure, network, security, and desktop teams.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • MCSA certification (or equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Strong working knowledge of PowerShell scripting.
  • Experience with Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) environments.
  • Understanding of Active Directory, GPOs, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Basic knowledge of virtualization (Hyper-V or VMware).

Professional Skills

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to learn and grow into a senior system administration role.
