Junior Scala Engineer (Remote)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce is seeking a Junior Scala Engineer to join our team in support of a major telecommunications client. This is a remote contract opportunity for an early-career engineer who is eager to learn, grow, and make an impact within a large-scale data platform environment.

Summary:
Our client is seeking an engineer with 2-3 years of experience, a strong foundation in Scala, solid familiarity with Kafka, and hands-on experience building streaming data pipelines. This is a highly technical role focused on developing and maintaining scalable, reliable data systems that power critical business operations.

Responsibilities:
* Design and build scalable data pipelines to ingest, transform, and deliver datasets for internal teams and external stakeholders
* Develop and maintain real-time streaming and hourly batch-processing pipelines
* Implement new data exports and update business logic across multiple data feeds
* Contribute to high-volume, billion-scale streaming data infrastructure
* Ensure data accuracy, quality, and integrity throughout ingestion and processing

Typical Day-to-Day:
* Participate in a short morning stand-up (approx. 15 minutes) and a developer sync (10-30 minutes)
* Enjoy focused development time with minimal meetings outside weekly team syncs
* Work within a 2-week agile sprint cycle with Tuesday production releases during business hours
* Core working hours follow Mountain Standard Time (MST)
* Participate in an on-call rotation (Mon-Fri, 8am-7pm MST, approximately once every six weeks)

REQUIREMENTS:
* 2-3 years of professional Scala development with strong functional programming foundations
* Experience with Apache Spark Structured Streaming (Scala) including migrations, new feature development, and performance optimization
* Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka, including producer/consumer offset management and at-least-once/at-most-once semantics
* Familiarity with container orchestration concepts (Kubernetes preferred)
* Basic exposure to AWS services (S3, Athena, Lambda, IAM, EMR)
* Strong SQL skills for data exploration and validation
* Experience supporting large-scale or high-volume data pipelines
* Comfortable working in a Mac development environment
* Nice to have: Experience with Terraform

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
