JOB DESCRIPTION
Apex Systems is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Data Architect to support data modernization initiatives within our consulting practice. This role focuses on organizing and optimizing large volumes of unstructured and loosely governed data in Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform) using BigQuery. The objective is to implement a scalable, self-service analytics environment through a structured, three-tiered data architecture. The ideal candidate will lead both the discovery and implementation phases-assessing existing data assets, defining architectural standards, and guiding the rollout of raw, curated, and reporting data layers. Responsibilities include transformation logic using DBT, evaluating cataloging and metadata tooling, and exploring automation techniques using Python and AI technologies to enhance data lineage and governance.

- Identify and evaluate new team members through professional networking and technical screening.
- Perform assessments of clients environments and design robust solutions and roadmaps.
- Lead discovery and analysis of current-state Google Cloud Platform BigQuery environments, identifying redundant schemas and datasets.
- Design and implement a scalable 3-tier data architecture: raw, curated, and reporting layers.
- Develop a roadmap to rationalize and unify data assets and architectural processes.
- Use DBT to manage and standardize data transformation between layers.
- Evaluate and recommend tooling for data cataloging, metadata management, and data lineage.
- Automate metadata and lineage processes using Python and AI-based scripting solutions.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to embed DevOps and CI/CD solutions.
- Provide documentation, architecture diagrams, and guidance for long-term sustainability and scalability.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- 7+ years of experience in data architecture and engineering, including at least 3 years of hands[1]on work in Google Cloud Platform BigQuery.
- Proven experience designing and implementing tiered data architectures for analytics.
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, and DBT for data transformation and automation.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, version control (e.g., Git), and infrastructure automation.
- Experience with data governance practices, including lineage and metadata management.
- Strong communication and consulting skills with the ability to deliver solutions across cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated success leading discovery and roadmap efforts in complex data environments.
Preferred:
- Experience in the financial services industry is a plus.
- Familiarity with AI-based tools for data cataloging or lineage automation (e.g., Copilot, DataHub, open-source frameworks).
- Google Cloud Platform Professional Data Engineer certification strongly preferred
- Exposure to metadata management tools and self-service analytics enablement.
- Experience in a consulting or project-based delivery environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
