MITRE operates the Center for Enterprise Modernization (CEM) Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) on behalf of our public sector sponsors. MITRE's Commerce Division is dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) in its mission to create the conditions for economic growth and opportunity for all communities. We collaborate with the 13 DOC bureaus and other independent government agencies to drive U.S. competitiveness, spur innovation, and foster job growth. Our mission-driven teams provide Commerce bureaus and offices with technical expertise and innovative solutions to help these sponsors navigate a dynamic federal environment and deliver impactful solutions.

MITRE is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Data Scientist with statistical and AI expertise to join our multidisciplinary team to support a growing and diverse portfolio of sponsors within MITRE's Commerce Division. In this role, you will leverage your capabilities and experiences in data science, statistics, and artificial intelligence to develop innovative solutions for a wide range of mission-critical challenges. You will work on projects that involve analyzing complex datasets, building predictive models, and applying advanced AI techniques to solve real-world problems.

As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be a member of an interdisciplinary team and will participate in the following activities:

• Analyze large, complex datasets to identify patterns, trends, and insights. Develop statistical models and machine learning algorithms to solve challenging problems
• Apply advanced statistical techniques, such as Bayesian inference, predictive modeling, and experimental design, to support decision-making
• Apply technical knowledge and system-level thinking to develop robust, secure, and high-performance solutions, and leverage technological advancements
• Prepare research code for implementation, including code audits, hardening, and/or optimization, and testing to confirm that code functions as expected
• Identify opportunities and lead efforts to design and apply AI solutions, providing guidance on the selection and application of appropriate analytic methods and techniques
• Participate in independent peer reviews of methodologies, code, etc., for correctness and completeness
• Work closely with cross-functional MITRE and sponsor teams to solve challenging problems
• Research and recommend leading practices, methodologies, tools, and techniques
• Develop innovative solutions to present detailed and complex concepts effectively, not just using presentations and documents
• Proactively identify and capture emerging opportunities with existing or new sponsors to collaboratively define the scope, objectives and strategic approach
• Participate in department, division, and corporate-wide relationship-building opportunities and learning and development programs

Minimum Qualifications:

• A minimum of 8 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
• Proficiency in statistical programming languages such as R and Python
• Proficiency with development ecosystems like Jupyter Notebook, AWS SageMaker or Google Colab
• Familiarity with data pipeline tools like Apache Airflow or Dagster
• Experience working with large, complex datasets, including data cleaning, preprocessing, and integration
• Experience interacting with senior government officials with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences through strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience leading small teams
• Demonstrated ability to tackle complex, ambiguous problems using data-driven approaches
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Suitability security clearance.
• This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in government, defense, or other mission-driven sectors.
• Active security clearance.
