Why Patients Need You

Pfizer's purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients' lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer's purpose where we translate science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in discovery, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will be a key contributor to our mission of bringing best in class medicines to patients around the world.

What You Will Achieve

Pfizer's Oncology Research Unit (ORU) is working to change the trajectory of cancer by translating breakthrough discoveries in cancer research into the best medicines imaginable for patients. Pfizer's ORU in La Jolla, California, is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate (PhD) for the Oncogene & Cancer Vulnerabilities (O&CV) group within Pfizer's Cancer Cell Biology division. Pfizer's Cancer Cell Biology division is focused on applying the latest scientific knowledge and novel approaches to discover truly innovative therapies for patients. O&CV supports small molecule cancer drug discovery and development all the way from target discovery and validation through early clinical development. As a Postdoctoral fellow you will be an integral part of our collective efforts to discover and target drivers of tumor evolution to overcome acquired and adaptive resistance networks to existing small molecule therapies. You will work in a lab-based setting and carry-out molecular and cellular based assays including functional genomic studies and data analysis; employ critical thinking to design and interpret experiments and communicate research findings to mentors and the wider Cancer Cell Biology team. As the applicant integrates data from across different divisions they will gain exposure to the broad Pfizer organization, learn from collaborations with cross-functional teams and be part of a culture that embraces scientific excellence and personal development.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Design, execute and analyze experiments to address the basic and translational biology of novel drug targets, their molecular pathways, and their connection to human disease.
  • Design, execute and analyze experiments to interrogate adaptive and acquired resistance nodes and networks of small molecules targeting oncogenic signaling pathways to inform mitigation strategies for these tumor types.
  • Apply strong attention to detail in experimental design, execution, and interpretation.
  • Actively partake in scientific discussions and be informed of publications in relevant areas.
  • Effectively communicate and present research findings in small group meetings and larger project team meetings.
  • Take initiative to collaborate with colleagues within and across departments to drive projects forward.
  • Contribute to a culture that values teamwork, collegiality, accountability, and continued learning and growth.
  • Publish in high-impact journals.
  • Represent Pfizer at scientific conferences by presenting data resulting from independent research.
  • Contribute to building a culture that embraces scientific excellence, urgency, partnerships with key stakeholders, continuous learning and improvement, increasing technical skill base and cancer biology expertise.
Qualifications

Must-Have
  • PhD in T umor /Cancer Cell B iology, P harmacology, or similar. PhD students in the last year of their thesis work are eligible to apply if all other requirements will be met at the time of the position's start.
  • No more than 2 years of post-degree experience.
  • Strong record of scientific achievement: publications, conference presentations, etc.
  • Track record of independent research evidenced by at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Track record of independent acclaimed research evidenced by conference presentation at internationally recognized conference series.
  • Strong proficiency with foundational Cell and Molecular Biology techniques (eg: Construct Design, Lentiviral Generation, Stable Cell line Generation, 2D-adhered and 3D-Spheroid Proliferation assays, Western blots, QPCR etc).
  • Strong proficiency in functional genomic and protein interrogation methods (eg: CRISPR, DTAG, etc). Experience in use of CRISPR-based techniques for gene knockout, gene editing.
  • Excellent organization and planning ability, good verbal and written communication skills, and strong intrinsic motivation to deliver breakthrough therapies for patients.
  • Willingness to make a minimum 2-year commitment.
Nice-to-Have
  • Research experience in areas of tumor biology, such as tumor heterogeneity, plasticity, and adaptive networks/ acquired resistance to small molecule inhibitors.
  • Knowledgeable in oncogenic signaling pathways.
  • Proficiency in integration of molecular profiling data including transcriptomic, proteomic, and genomic datasets.
  • Experience using R-programing language for interpretation of large multi-omic data sets for figure generation.
