Job Description

Research & Advanced Engineering Thermal Systems Engineer

Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. We deliver ways to make smarter vehicles and innovate using sustainable, environmentally and socially responsible methods and materials. Since 2000, we have used twelve industry- and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up to 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.

In this position...

You will have the opportunity to lead the development of new thermal management technologies for future Ford and Lincoln Electrified Vehicles

What you'll do...

The Research & Advanced Engineering Thermal Systems Engineer designs, develops, validates, and implements novel, energy efficient, robust, compact, low-cost thermal system components, and architecture designs for future Electrified vehicles (EVs, Fuel Cell, etc.) to deliver improved thermal management and vehicle energy management performance.

Lead technology projects to design, develop, validate, and implement new and advanced thermal management systems and components for future Ford and Lincoln electrified vehicles (EVs, Fuel Cell vehicles, etc.)
  • Apply systems engineering and problem-solving tools and methods (Boundary Diagrams, P-Diagrams, DFMEA, RCL, RDM) for design development, cascading requirements, and project scoping.
  • Interact with and facilitate cross functional teams in the development of requirements and design verification plans for attribute and robustness assessment.
  • Lead and manage workstreams to achieve project deliverables including simulation and testing for technology benefit assessment and demonstration.
  • Analyze simulation and test results to assess system performance and recommend design improvements.
  • Collaborate with other teams at Ford for developing the new technologies.
  • Develop requirements to share with suppliers for design proposals.
  • Interact with suppliers to assess new thermal system and component designs
  • Lead and manage CAD designers for vehicle package assessment
  • Lead and manage systems engineering documentation and communicate engineering assumptions to cross-functional teams.
  • Prepare and present project gateway reviews to management.
  • Propose, lead, and manage research projects with universities to develop new thermal system design concepts and technologies.

You'll have...

MS in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or related field.

5+ years of design, development and systems engineering experience in Thermal Systems for Electrified Vehicles

1+ years of experience conducting bench or vehicle tests of thermal components and systems in lab and wind tunnels

1+ years of experience in the use of test data acquisition systems, data processing and analysis for design, development, and validation of thermal systems

Even better, you may have...

PhD in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or related field

Experienced in coordinating vehicle instrumentation and troubleshooting

Strong understanding of thermal system and component designs (coolant and refrigerant subsystems), functions, requirements, its capabilities, current limitations, and future needs

Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Working knowledge of core systems engineering tools (P-diagrams, FMEA, DVP&R), requirements development and cascade process.

Previous experience of leading large project teams and cross functional groups

Good understanding of electrified propulsion system architectures and vehicle attribute trade-offs.

Good understanding and experience with development of controls and calibration strategies for vehicle thermal and energy management.

Working knowledge of thermal system simulations, vehicle testing, and validation.

Working knowledge of ATI Vision, MATLAB, LabView, Thermal simulation tools

Working knowledge of Teamcenter to view component and system CAD design/package

Familiarity with Ford R&AE QOS (Discovery, GTDS).

Ability to summarize and communicate project updates/issues to management
