About the Role
Uber's Engineering Privacy & Security organization is looking for a Sr. Engineering Manager to lead our privacy engineering & science team. In this role you will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled software engineers & applied scientists who think 'privacy & security by design'. You will work closely with our product engineering, product management, privacy legal, and operations teams to build highly scalable and extensible privacy solutions and toolings, and in the process, lay the foundation for our next-generation, foundational privacy & security platform. This is a unique opportunity for an sr. engineering manager who is collaborative and has a healthy sense of curiosity to make real positive impacts to Uber's privacy & security posture, lead the strategic direction and evolution of our privacy & security platform, and lead cutting-edge ML/LLM research in the area of privacy and security.
What You'll Do
  • Lead, manage, and develop our geographically distributed engineering & science team.
  • Mentor junior software engineers & scientists.
  • Manage a team that designs, builds and deploys in-house privacy & security solutions.
  • Partner with internal customers such as infrastructure and operations teams to build services and systems to optimize continuous deployment, privacy enablement, & threat and vulnerability detection.
  • Create quality written work products and engineering artifacts for both technical and non-technical consumers
  • Be a subject matter expert and ambassador to Uber Engineering and our subsidiaries, for privacy & security best practices, and all related aspects of privacy preserving technologies.
  • Lead cutting edge ML & Engineering research to enhance our privacy and security posture.
Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years experience as a software engineer, and programming skills in Java, Go, or Python
  • 5+ years full-time engineering management work experience.
  • Experience leading both engineers and applied/data scientists.
  • Ability to problems solve and make complex decisions with incomplete information in highly ambiguous situations and environments.
  • Great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a track record of successful execution in cloud security engineering or product development at cloud-scale.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building privacy preserving technologies.
  • Prior experience in leading teams over multiple locations, and working across multiple in-house engineering organizations
  • Experience in algorithm development and prototyping.
  • Experience with productionizing algorithms for real-time systems.
  • Good understanding of LLM fine-tuning, RAG, and guardrails

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year.

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year.
