Job Details

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Physical and Post Production Technology team as a Senior Media Systems Engineer. We are looking for a talented engineer to support Industrial Light & Magic and Lucasfilm technology based at the beautiful and newly remodeled Presidio campus in San Francisco.

The Senior Media Systems Engineer is responsible for front line maintenance and support of all department related A/V and computer equipment. The engineer is also required to assist the director with the planning, designing, procurement and implementation of media technology systems. Providing procedural assistance to production and technical staff is also part of the daily duties.

Strong experience with SDI video and audio infrastructure is a requirement.

What You'll Do
  • Frontline Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
    • Address technical issues with physical and post-production equipment, ranging from professional to consumer-grade AV equipment.
    • Troubleshoot and maintain specific equipment including 12G SDI routers, enterprise KVM matrix, timing signal generators and distribution, video monitors, AV control systems, motion capture equipment, video playback workstations, AV streaming appliances, etc.
  • Installation and Deployment:
    • Install and commision various AV equipment used in different technical and operational departments throughout ILM and Lucasfilm
  • Linux Media Server Maintenance:
    • Maintain the hardware and software of our Linux-based media playback servers.
  • Networking Troubleshooting:
    • Work with the network team to identify basic networking issues related to the functionality of the AV systems.
  • Documentation and CAD Drawings:
    • Create and maintain documentation using tools like Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Office, Visio, etc.
    • Create and update Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings related to AV systems.
  • Reporting and Presentations:
    • Generate high-quality reports and presentations for management.
  • Off-Hours Work:
    • Participate in off-hours maintenance, upgrades, and installations as necessary.
  • On-Call Rotation:
    • Participate in on-call rotation to provide off-hour technical support
  • Technology Research and Evaluation:
    • Conduct research and evaluate new technologies and trends to understand their potential impact on current and future workflows within the organization.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years' installation and support experience in post-production facilities with complex audio visual systems
  • BS in engineering or equivalent professional experience required
  • Up-to-Date knowledge and a passion for technology relating to media and post-production
  • Solid understanding and practical experience of various media file formats
  • Solid understanding and practical experience with video and audio transport streams
  • Familiarity and practical experience with professional post production equipment including video routers, disk-based playback appliances, SAN and NAS file servers, Linux workstations, network routers and switches, KVM routers, A/V control systems etc.
  • Linux, OS X and Windows administration skills
  • Experience troubleshooting TCP/IP, Ethernet, UDP, NFS & CIFS protocols, DNS, DHCP, Fiber channel and familiar with basic network troubleshooting tools
  • Basic image format knowledge including a basic understanding of REC709/DCI color space, gamma encoding, color sub sampling etc.
  • Knowledge and experience with various file formats used in post-production including EXR, DPX, TIFF, JPEG2000, H.264, DNX, HEVC, PRORES etc.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner: Gather and analyze information skillfully, develop alternative solutions, work well in group problem solving situations, use reason even when dealing with emotional topics
  • Ability to identify and address technical issues without direct supervision, while also working effectively as part of a team

  • First hand experience with the following or equivalent post production equipment a plus including:
    • Evertz EQx 12G SDI router
    • ADDER Infinity enterprise KVM
    • Q-SYS Core audio processing
    • Christie DLP projectors
    • WireCad
    • Legacy Video Tape Decks (Digibeta, SRW, Betacam etc.)

  • Advanced understanding of and experience with Linux, OS X and Windows operating systems
  • Avid certified or wide spread experience with Avid media composer
  • A solid understanding of IP networks with some practical in field experience

The hiring range for this position in San Francisco, California is $149,000.00 - $199,800.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
