About the Core Network Engineering (CNE) Team:
General Motors' Core Network Engineering (CNE) team is a highly skilled group of senior network engineers responsible for the design, implementation, and standardization of GM's global network infrastructure. The team's scope includes routing, switching, cloud networking, internet engineering, WAN, and LAN technologies, with a focus on OSI layers 1 through 4. CNE engineers lead innovation initiatives and serve as subject matter experts for operational challenges in the core network space. This team operates in a fast-paced, technology-forward environment, leveraging emerging solutions to deliver resilient, scalable, and secure network services that meet GM's business needs and service level commitments.
The Role:
The Level 7 Systems Engineer will provide advanced engineering support for network and telecom infrastructure projects, contribute to strategic initiatives, and participate in a rotational on-call schedule for operational support. This role requires flexibility to work during evenings and weekends to accommodate change control windows and critical incident response.

What You'll Do:
- Lead and support engineering projects across WAN, LAN, and data center environments
- Participate in a rotational on-call schedule for high-priority operational issues
- Develop and maintain engineering work orders (EWOs) and configuration templates
- Create bills of materials (BOMs) and coordinate hardware procurement with suppliers
- Perform advanced (Level 4) troubleshooting for routing, hardware, circuit, bug, and performance issues
- Deliver technical presentations on emerging technologies and provide status updates to leadership and stakeholders
- Escalate and communicate effectively with leadership during critical incidents
- Ensure compliance with GM's engineering standards and change management protocols
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent certifications
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in data networking and unified communications
- Proven expertise in enterprise-scale network infrastructure design and implementation
- Strong analytical skills and ability to lead during outage and conflict resolution scenarios
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Technical Expertise:

- WAN Technologies: Internet, MPLS, SD-WAN, IPSEC, DMVPN
- Routing Protocols: OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, IGRP, IS-IS
- Data Center LAN: Cisco ACI, Cisco Nexus platforms. AI/ML
- Structured Cabling: Fiber, copper, AOC, power distribution, patch panels
- Automation: Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, Python and related tools
- Network Appliances: Firewalls, load balancers, packet sniffers
- Infrastructure Services: DNS, DHCP, NTP, SNMP, Authentication, Active Directory, LDAP
