Job Description
Thermo Fisher Scientific's Environmental and Process Monitoring business unit is seeking a Systems Engineer III to serve as the primary systems engineer for our continuous-operation FTIR-based industrial gas analyzer products. Based in Madison, WI, you'll drive new product development and be the systems owner for our MAX product lines, working closely with Applications Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering teams.

Job Description
Thermo Fisher Scientific's Environmental and Process Monitoring business unit is seeking a Systems Engineer III to serve as the primary systems engineer for our continuous-operation FTIR-based industrial gas analyzer products. Based in Madison, WI, you'll drive new product development and be the systems owner for our MAX product lines, working closely with Applications Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering teams.
What you'll do
Drive Exciting Technical Development & Own Product Architecture
- Own systems engineering for industrial FTIR-based gas analyzers, developing next-generation designs for continuous emissions monitoring and process gas applications
- Perform hands-on design, prototyping, and testing in our high-paced development environment, from individual components to full integrated solutions
- Work directly with customers to understand their needs and challenges, translating these into requirements and system design concepts.
- Develop product architecture documentation such as system schematics, plumbing diagrams, and flow diagrams
- Design and select components for gas handling systems including pneumatic/solenoid valves, mass flow controllers, heaters, and various sensors
- Drive technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing, ensuring smooth transitions and production readiness
Technical Leadership
- Provide strong technical leadership as the Engineering point of contact for MAX products across a globally distributed team
- Lead stage-gate activities for development projects to support timely product launches
- Perform risk analyses and DFMEA to ensure product reliability and safety
- Build and maintain regulatory technical files and serve as the ECO process leader
- Provide sustaining engineering support for manufacturing, service, quality, and regulatory groups as a product line expert
What you'll bring
- BS in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, Chemical, or related engineering field; MS preferred
- 5+ years in systems engineering for complex electromechanical or analytical instrumentation is required
- Experience with FTIR technology is a strong plus
- Proficiency in PLC programming, industrial control systems (analog and digital I/O), and communication methodologies such as Modbus TCP/IP is a plus.
- Expertise in gas handling system design, flow controls, and integration is a strong plus
- Experience in creating system schematics, flow diagrams, and associated technical documentation is required
- Experience with risk analysis methodologies and DFMEA is helpful
- A desire for hands-on problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in a R&D laboratory environment is needed
- Ability to work independently through ambiguity

- Successful technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing with minimal early production disruptions
- Decrease in manufacturing quality issues by offering proactive assistance, updated test methodologies, and training
