Overview
The Technical Data Steward ensures HR data is accurate, secure, and compliant with governance standards. This hands-on role manages risk inventories, executes risk workflows, performs data quality checks, and builds dashboards to monitor trends. Acting as a technical advisor, you'll maintain data lineage, implement governance frameworks, and partner with stakeholders to resolve data issues and strengthen enterprise data controls.

The Technical Data Steward ensures HR data is accurate, secure, and compliant with governance standards. This hands-on role manages risk inventories, executes risk workflows, performs data quality checks, and builds dashboards to monitor trends. Acting as a technical advisor, you'll maintain data lineage, implement governance frameworks, and partner with stakeholders to resolve data issues and strengthen enterprise data controls.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and update HR data risk inventories and trackers, including critical data elements, applications, AI/analytics use cases, vendors, and data transfers.
- Execute and coordinate HR risk workflows (AI assessments, application risk reviews, access reviews, vendor/data transfer reviews) with full documentation and audit readiness.
- Perform data quality checks using SQL and Excel (completeness, duplicates, out-of-range values); log issues, assign owners, and track remediation.
- Build and refresh dashboards and reports showing control coverage, issues, and trends across HR Data Risk, AI Risk, and Data Quality.
- Translate HR Data Risk Framework into practical SOPs, checklists, and process maps for repeatable processes.
- Capture and maintain data lineage and technical metadata attributes.
- Provide technical expertise for source systems, ETL processes, data stores, data warehouses, and BI tools.
- Oversee and assess data-access controls; support incident response for unauthorized data access.
- Partner with stakeholders to implement standards, controls, and technical solutions in accordance with enterprise data governance policies.
- Organize and package evidence (logs, reports, approvals) for governance forums, audits, and performance reviews.
- Support AI and advanced analytics governance by assisting with intake forms and updating registries.
- Serve as a point of contact for technical data issues and collaborate with HR stakeholders, technology, vendor management, and risk partners.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant experience in one or more:
- Data governance, data quality, data stewardship, risk/compliance, IT/Audit or analytics/ BI in a regulated environment (Financial services or similar preferred)
- Practical experience with:
- SQL for querying and joining datasets
- At least one BI reporting tool (PowerBI, Tableau)
- Advanced Excel (Pivot tables, lookups filters) for data checks and analysis
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Execute and improve data quality or control processes (even if not labeled that way)
- Drive initiatives/ workstreams with minimal oversight-organize work, coordinate stakeholders and deliver outcomes
- Excellent root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Capable of translating technical/data details into clear, business-relevant messages
- Experience with:
- Data Governance concepts (CDEs, data ownership, lineage, data controls)
- Risk/governance tooling data catalogs, ticketing/work management (Service Now, GRC)
- Exposure to AI/ML or advanced analytics governance (model risk, AI intake processes, etc)
- Exposure to Python/R or similar for light analysis/automation (nice to have, not required)
Desired Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Technical program management or consulting
