Job Description

The Virginia Department of Elections (ELECT) is seeking a highly skilled Technical Writer with proven experience in developing clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation for complex technical products. This role is critical in ensuring technical information is effectively communicated to both technical and non-technical audiences.

The Technical Writer will support a cloud-based software development project, currently in its initial phase, and will play a key role in creating and maintaining high-quality documentation. This engagement will specifically require developing a style guide for the software development project.

Applicants must submit a writing sample, preferably a style guide or similar documentation.

Hybrid work schedule required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible documentation for diverse audiences

  • Develop and maintain documentation such as user guides, API documentation, release notes, SOPs, and style guides

  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and SMEs within an Agile/Scrum environment

  • Manage multiple documentation deliverables while meeting project deadlines

  • Maintain version control and documentation review processes

  • Ensure documentation meets agency standards, accessibility requirements, and formatting guidelines

  • Interview subject matter experts and distill complex information into usable content


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in English, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or a related field

  • 5+ years of technical writing experience, preferably in government or technology environments

  • Expertise with documentation tools such as MS Word, Google Docs, Confluence

  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, SnagIT, or similar tools for visuals

  • Experience with Git or other version control systems (contributor or read-only level)

  • Familiarity with GitBook or similar documentation platforms

  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies

  • Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and software architecture concepts

  • Ability to read and understand basic code snippets

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail


Highly Desired Skills

  • Experience with government documentation standards and accessibility compliance

  • Familiarity with diagramming tools such as Lucidchart or Draw.io

  • Basic knowledge of programming languages or IT systems

  • Experience with UX writing

  • Knowledge of Markdown and HTML/CSS

  • Experience writing documentation for software products (SaaS, desktop, or mobile applications)


Additional Notes

  • Writing sample is mandatory (style guide preferred)

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills are essential
