At Zappos Tech, we're on a mission to deliver unparalleled shopping experiences to our customers. We're seeking a Software Development Engineer III (SDE3) to join our Discovery Team, the heart of the customer journey at Zappos. As an SDE3, you will help lead software development for the core customer journey on Zappos.com - from Homepage to checkout: Search, Search Results, Homepage, Ads, Widgets, Recommendations, and much more. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• Lead and Innovate: Drive the development and maintenance of Java-based applications leveraging AWS services (ECS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB). Your work will ensure our architecture supports scalable, maintainable, and high-quality solutions.
• Collaborate for Success: Work hand-in-hand with product managers, UX designers, and engineers. Your role will be pivotal in creating optimal customer experiences, steering technology choices, and ensuring the architectural integrity of our systems.
• Mentor and Elevate: Guide junior developers, raising the coding standards bar and providing constructive feedback. Your expertise will help mold the next generation of engineers.
• Navigate Ambiguity: Tackle complex problems without a predefined technology strategy. You'll balance business needs with technical solutions, ensuring scalability and future growth.
• Champion Best Practices: Your code will not only solve problems efficiently but also serve as a benchmark for quality and best practices within the team.
• Continuous Learning and Leadership: As a key influencer in team strategy and goals, you'll foster an environment of growth, inclusivity, and open dialogue.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

• Experience and Expertise: 5+ years of professional software development experience, including mastery of at least one programming language and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, and software design).
• Technical Leadership: 5+ years of leading design and architecture decisions, mentoring teams, and driving the delivery of complex, service-oriented systems.
• Engineering Excellence: 5+ years of experience in the full software development lifecycle, including enforcing coding standards, conducting code reviews, managing source control, overseeing build processes, performing testing, and handling operations.
• AWS Savvy: Hands-on experience with AWS technologies and a deep understanding of Java 8+, especially with the Spring Framework.
• Problem Solver: Exceptional analytical skills and a proven ability to navigate ambiguity, making informed decisions based on customer and business insights.
• Communication Expert: Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across all organizational levels.

WHAT REALLY WOWS US

• Advanced AWS and Java Expertise: You have a deep knowledge in DynamoDB, ECS, SQS, SNS, S3, and are comfortable with CI/CD automation.
• Search Engine Proficiency: 2+ years of experience with search engines (ideally Solr), enhancing our customers' discovery journey.
• Open Source Experience: Experience with open-source tools (Git, SpringMVC, SpringBoot, Maven, Gradle, Ant, JUnit, Jenkins) to help us stay at the forefront of technology.
• Academic Background: A Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
• Strategic Thinker: A knack for operational excellence, process improvement, and a history of solving complex problems with innovative non-technical solutions.

This role is open to candidates physically located in the following metropolitan statistical areas: Austin, TX; Las Vegas, NV; New York, NY; and Seattle, WA. Candidates who are not physically located in one of these areas may not be considered for this role.

The base pay range for this position is $187,000-212,000 per year ; however,

base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, a full range of medical and other benefits is offered.
