Tech Hiring Maintains Momentum

It’s no secret that 2022 was a tough year for Big Tech and many tech-focused startups. Implosion might be an exaggeration; then again, with nearly 100,000 layoffs in the tech sphere during the year (according to Crunchbase), maybe not. Although it remains to be seen how the Big Tech landscape will look when the dust settles, one thing is immediately clear: despite high-profile headlines about layoffs, hiring freezes and other cost-cutting efforts in the Big Tech and startup world, general demand for tech talent continues nearly unchecked.

2023 will be a year in which the incredibly stalwart tech hiring momentum will be tested again, as the world prepares itself for a recession of unknown magnitude. Tech hiring passed its last big test, the COVID pause of 2020, with flying colors. Job postings experienced a minor dip for eight months between April and November 2020, then followed that up with 16 months of tech job posting growth. Regardless of the scope of a recession, there’s a high level of optimism that tech hiring, especially those in the core areas of software development, engineering, cybersecurity and data management, will continue strongly due to tech professionals’ massive utility to all businesses. Some have even gone so far as to say that certain tech jobs are recession-proof.

What HR Professionals Can Do Now

For those who are already well-versed in hiring technology professionals, dig in for a year of potentially even stiffer competition for top talent. Just because more of the best professionals are job hunting doesn’t mean they’ll be out there for long (Revelio Labs recently reported that 70% of laid-off professionals from tech companies are finding new jobs within three months).

For those of you working in organizations outside of the traditional tech sphere, you will have to work harder to educate tech professionals on what your organization offers through the lens of what they really care about.
