Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking one full-time Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Test Engineer to work in the Mission Assurance Division (NT) at Kirtland Air Force Base near Albuquerque, NM.
Value of Position (VoP): NH-0801-03 (81) which has a typical 2026 salary range of $76,463- $112,690 (basic salary without locality included). Locality for Albuquerque-Santa Fe area is 18.33% of basic salary.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an EMP Effects Technical Action Officer for the Air Force EMP Test Program, responsible for assisting in the re-building of the AF EMP program to include program oversight, standardizing the development, sustainment and maintenance of current and/or future execution of both Continuous Wave Immersion (CWI) and Threat Level aircraft EMP testing, to include a findings database.
SKILLS:
Candidates should have a strong background in nuclear weapons effects (to include EMP effects and standards), electromagnetic environmental effects, electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference testing, test plan/report development, data analysis, model development, or database maintenance with strong ability to gather, assemble, analyze and interpret data and results to provide support to decision makers. Experience with electromagnetic modeling and simulation is also desired.
Candidates should have demonstrated experience in working effectively with multiple DoD, academic and private industry organizations.
Operational aircraft and EMP knowledge and/or experience is highly desired.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work with multiple teams
Familiarity with general Radiofrequency Testing
Experience using principles of systems engineering and data analytics to execute survivability and effectiveness assessments of complex systems
Knowledge of system EMP military standards (MIL-STD-3023, MIL-STD-2169, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-464)
Highly desired: 3-5 years of engineering or scientific discipline in the following areas: Electrical Engineer, Test Engineer, EMC/EMI Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, Physicist, Nuclear Engineer, Operational Research, and/or Mathematics/Statistics
DUTIES:
Coordinates and communicates with multiple System Program Offices to inform all aspects of EMP testing activities with relevant survivability analyses, data collection survey findings, and mitigation strategies
Create and maintain a configuration control database that tracks all platform tested, test points and the findings
Support the standardization of EMP test plans/reports
Analyze test data & create findings report
Recommendation of equipment upgrades and/or test protocol modification based on hardness data analytics
Contribute to current and future policy and guidance development
Travel for test execution and planning
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:
U.S. Citizenship
Required to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; employee must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
This is an Air Force Drug Testing Designated Position (TDP). The incumbent will be subject to random drug testing
Employee may be required to work extended or other than normal duty hours to include evenings and weekends and may be subject to recall. Incumbent may be required to report to work during base exercises, contingencies, or emergency situations and overtime/comp time/credit hours may be required to accomplish assigned duties.
Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
