What You'll Do:The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, and repair of the hotel's mechanical systems and equipment. This position plays an essential role in maintaining a comfortable and safe environment for guests and colleagues throughout guestrooms, meeting and event spaces, restaurants, kitchens, public areas, and back-of-house operations.
The Mechanical Engineer performs preventive and corrective maintenance, responds to service requests and equipment breakdowns, and troubleshoots a variety of HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, and
commercial kitchen equipment . The ideal candidate is a skilled, dependable, hands-on technician who takes pride in maintaining equipment to a high standard and providing responsive service to hotel operations.
Essential Responsibilities:- Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on hotel mechanical systems and equipment.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC systems, including air-handling units, fan-coil units, pumps, motors, exhaust systems, boilers, cooling towers, and associated controls.
- Maintain and repair plumbing systems, including fixtures, valves, pumps, drains, water heaters, and domestic hot-water systems.
- Troubleshoot and maintain commercial refrigeration equipment, including walk-in and reach-in refrigerators/freezers and ice machines.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on commercial kitchen and food-service equipment, including ovens, ranges, fryers, grills, griddles, steamers, dishwashers, warming equipment, mixers, slicers, and related equipment.
- Troubleshoot equipment involving mechanical, electrical, gas, refrigeration, and control components within the scope of training, certification, and authorization.
- Respond promptly to engineering work orders and service calls from guestrooms, restaurants, banquet operations, housekeeping, food and beverage, and other hotel departments.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repair solutions or the need for outside vendor support.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, preventive maintenance, repairs, equipment conditions, and parts used.
- Conduct routine inspections of mechanical rooms, kitchens, equipment, guestrooms, and public areas to identify maintenance needs before failures occur.
- Monitor equipment operation and identify opportunities to improve reliability, energy efficiency, and operating costs.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of commonly used mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and kitchen-equipment parts and supplies.
- Coordinate with contractors and service vendors as directed by Engineering leadership.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe mechanical rooms, engineering workspaces, and equipment areas.
- Follow all hotel safety policies, OSHA requirements, applicable building and fire codes, and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Assist with hotel emergency response and fire/life-safety procedures as required.
- Support hotel operations during high-occupancy periods, conventions, banquets, special events, and other peak business periods.
- Provide professional and courteous service to guests and colleagues when responding to maintenance requests.
- Communicate significant equipment issues, safety concerns, and repair recommendations to Engineering leadership.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
The Mechanical Engineer may be required to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations. The position interacts regularly with hotel guests, colleagues, vendors, contractors, and leaders and is expected to consistently demonstrate professionalism and a service-focused approach.
This position requires regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The employee may be required to work in mechanical rooms, kitchens, rooftops, elevated areas, confined spaces, and other areas with varying temperatures and noise levels. The ability to lift and carry items weighing approximately
50 pounds and safely operate required tools and equipment is expected .
The hourly rate for this position is $30.12/hr. This position is eligible to earn overtime, shift differentials and premium pay under certain circumstances, tips, commissions, service charges, or incentive awards.
Qualifications:- Minimum of 3 years of experience in hotel engineering, commercial building maintenance, facilities maintenance, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, mechanical systems, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment and identify the root cause of equipment failures.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, meters, and other equipment required for maintenance and repair.
- Strong customer-service and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of an Engineering team.
- Ability to prioritize multiple work orders and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, overnight shifts, and emergency call-ins as operationally required.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials; climb ladders; bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Ability to work in environments that may be hot, cold, wet, noisy, or otherwise physically demanding.
- Previous experience in a full-service hotel, convention hotel, resort, hospital, commercial facility, or large institutional property .
- Experience maintaining and repairing commercial kitchen and food-service equipment .
- HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical trade certification.
- EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling.
- Experience with boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, motors, building automation systems, and commercial refrigeration.
- Knowledge of commercial kitchen gas, electrical, refrigeration, and exhaust systems.
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Familiarity with preventive-maintenance programs and manufacturer equipment specifications.
