Our Finance team plays a pivotal role in ensuring transparency, accuracy, disciplined execution, and sound financial decision-making. The Director of Finance will serve as a senior operating leader within Finance, with end-to-end ownership of core finance and accounting execution, team leadership, external advisor coordination, financial planning, and management reporting.
Role Overview:
The Director of Finance is responsible for leading the day-to-day Finance function and ensuring that accounting, reporting, forecasting, controls, audit, tax coordination, treasury, and finance operations are executed accurately and on time. This role is expected to operate with substantial independence, resolve issues at the Finance level before escalation, and serve as the primary operational point of contact for internal stakeholders and external finance partners. The Director will manage and develop finance and accounting staff, own the preparation of executive and Board financial materials, and provide senior finance leadership with complete, decision-ready analysis rather than work-in-progress. The ideal candidate combines strong U.S. GAAP and accounting expertise with hands-on operating discipline, business partnership, and proven Director-level leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Finance Operations, Month-End Close & Accounting Ownership:
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process from close calendar through final financial statements, including assignment of responsibilities, review, issue resolution, and completion of all supporting schedules.
- Direct the full-cycle accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash application, payroll accounting, bank reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and intercompany or other recurring accounting activities, as applicable.
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and material accounting estimates, ensuring complete support, appropriate segregation of duties, and compliance with U.S. GAAP.
- Own inventory and cost accounting, including inventory valuation, reserves, standard versus actual costing, manufacturing variances, overhead allocation, and margin analysis.
- Establish and enforce close deadlines and service expectations across Finance and cross-functional contributors; proactively resolve bottlenecks without routine escalation to senior finance leadership.
Financial Reporting, Technical Accounting & Management Reporting:
- Own the preparation, review, and tie-out of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting packages.
- Research and document accounting conclusions for non-routine or complex transactions and coordinate with external accounting advisors when specialized guidance is required.
- Prepare monthly variance analysis, KPI reporting, operating commentary, and decision-ready explanations of material changes in revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, working capital, and cash.
- Maintain financial reporting policies, accounting memos, supporting schedules, and documentation standards sufficient for audit and management review.
Budgeting, Forecasting, FP&A & Board Support:
- Own the annual budget process and rolling forecasts, including departmental inputs, revenue and gross margin assumptions, operating expense planning, headcount planning, capital expenditures, and cash flow forecasts.
- Lead monthly forecast-to-actual and budget-to-actual reviews with department leaders and ensure corrective actions or forecast updates are incorporated timely.
- Develop financial models and scenario analyses for strategic initiatives, pricing, capacity, capital investments, equipment financing, and other executive decisions.
- Prepare the Finance sections of Board and senior leadership materials, including financial statements, forecasts, KPI trends, cash and liquidity analysis, and supporting schedules; ensure all materials are internally reconciled and presentation-ready.
- Respond to follow-up questions from senior leadership by providing complete supporting analysis, source data, and recommendations.
Treasury, Cash Flow & Working Capital:
- Own short- and medium-term cash forecasting and provide regular liquidity updates, highlighting risks, timing issues, and required actions.
- Oversee banking administration, cash positioning, payment controls, and treasury processes within delegated authority.
- Drive working-capital performance through disciplined oversight of collections, aged receivables, vendor payment timing, inventory-related cash impacts, and other material cash conversion drivers.
- Coordinate routine lender, banking, equipment-financing, and other finance-provider information requests and reporting requirements.
Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance:
- Own the Finance internal control framework across accounting, payroll, revenue, expenditures, inventory, cash, and financial reporting processes.
- Serve as the primary day-to-day Finance lead for external and internal audits, including the PBC list, audit schedules, document collection, response coordination, open-item tracking, and timely resolution of auditor questions.
- Review and approve sensitive or higher-risk transactions within delegated authority, including customer refunds, credit memos, AR adjustments, manual journal entries, and other non-routine items.
- Identify control deficiencies, develop remediation plans, assign ownership, and track completion to strengthen governance and audit readiness.
- Ensure financial processes are designed and documented to support applicable regulatory and pharmaceutical-industry requirements, including SOX-style control principles and relevant FDA/cGMP considerations.
Tax, R&D Tax Credits & External Advisor Coordination:
- Own day-to-day coordination of U.S. federal, state, and local tax compliance matters, including income tax, sales/use tax, payroll-related tax matters, and other applicable filings, in partnership with external advisors.
- Serve as the primary Finance contact for external tax advisors, track information requests and filing calendars, review supporting data, and ensure deadlines are met.
- Coordinate R&D tax credit workstreams, including collection and validation of financial data, payroll information, project support, advisor requests, and reconciliation of credit calculations to company records.
- Coordinate Finance responses to tax notices, audits, information requests, and regulatory inquiries, escalating only material judgments, exposures, or executive decisions.
Strategic Finance, Capital Projects & Business Partnership:
- Partner with Operations, Manufacturing, Commercial, R&D, Quality, and other functions to translate operational activity into financial implications, forecasts, and decision support.
- Lead the Finance analysis for capital expenditures, equipment purchases or financing, make-versus-buy decisions, productivity initiatives, and other significant operating investments.
- Support pricing, profitability, customer economics, product or channel margin analysis, and other commercial decisions with fact-based financial analysis.
- Develop recommendations and financial scenarios for executive review, clearly identifying assumptions, risks, sensitivities, and expected financial impact.
Systems, Automation & Process Improvement:
- Own Finance requirements and business-process design for accounting, reporting, payroll, expense, billing, and other financial systems; ensure data integrity and appropriate access controls.
- Lead financial-system implementations, upgrades, integrations, and process redesigns in coordination with IT and operational stakeholders.
- Drive automation of reconciliations, reporting, data flows, recurring analyses, and other manual Finance processes to improve speed, reliability, and scalability.
- Maintain standardized Finance procedures, close checklists, approval matrices, calendars, and documentation so critical processes do not depend on a single individual.
Leadership, Team Management & Accountability:
- Directly manage designated finance and accounting team members and serve as the first leadership escalation point for day-to-day accounting, reporting, payroll, audit, tax, collections, and operational Finance matters.
- Set clear responsibilities, deadlines, performance standards, and review controls across the Finance team; ensure work is delegated at the appropriate level and completed without unnecessary upward escalation.
- Coach and develop team members, conduct performance management, identify staffing or capability gaps, and participate in hiring and succession planning.
- Create redundancy and cross-training across critical Finance processes to reduce key-person dependency and support business continuity.
- Build a culture of ownership, responsiveness, accuracy, confidentiality, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive Finance and Accounting experience, with broad hands-on responsibility across financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting/forecasting, audit, controls, and business support.
- 4+ years in a Director-level Finance leadership position with direct accountability for a Finance/Accounting function, team, or similarly broad scope.
- Strong command of U.S. GAAP, accrual accounting, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated ownership of monthly and annual close, external audit execution, budgeting and forecasting, management reporting, and cross-functional financial analysis.
- Proven experience managing and developing finance/accounting teams and operating as a senior escalation point.
- Strong Excel and financial-modeling capabilities, including variance analysis, scenario modeling, and executive-ready reporting.
- Ability to manage multiple high-priority workstreams independently, communicate clearly with senior leaders, and deliver accurate work under tight deadlines.
Preferred:
- CPA and/or MBA.
- Director-level Finance experience in pharmaceutical, healthcare, manufacturing, life sciences, or another regulated and inventory-intensive environment.
- Experience with inventory and cost accounting, standard costing, manufacturing variances, and gross-margin analysis.
- Experience preparing Board materials and supporting executive, investor, lender, or financial-institution reporting.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online and ERP or financial systems such as Zoho, Progen, SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms; experience with ADP is also preferred.
- Experience coordinating tax compliance, R&D tax credit studies, external advisors, and finance-related legal or claims support.
- Demonstrated success improving Finance processes through automation, stronger controls, standardized procedures, and team development.
