Job DetailsSystem Security Test Engineer
Position Summary
We are seeking a System Security Test Engineer to support the verification and validation of complex, mission-critical systems, including advanced networking, Voice over IP (VoIP), radio control, and Air Traffic Management systems.
This role will focus on hands-on system security testing and the assessment and verification of security controls against NIST SP 800-53 Revision 5 requirements. The ideal candidate combines a strong systems-testing background with practical cybersecurity knowledge and experience validating security controls in integrated hardware, software, and network environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, execute, and document system security test activities for complex integrated systems.
- Perform hands-on testing of advanced networking systems, VoIP systems, radio control equipment, and/or Air Traffic Management systems.
- Assess and verify implementation of NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 security controls.
- Perform security-control testing within key NIST control families, including:
o Access Control (AC)
o Configuration Management (CM)
o Identification and Authentication (IA)
o System and Communications Protection (SC)
o System and Information Integrity (SI)
- Develop detailed security test procedures, test cases, test scripts, expected results, and supporting documentation.
- Execute security verification testing in integrated system and lab environments.
- Validate user access, authentication, authorization, account management, privilege restrictions, configuration controls, communications protections, and system-integrity mechanisms.
- Analyze test results and identify security-control deficiencies, unexpected system behavior, and potential vulnerabilities.
- Document defects and security findings with clear supporting evidence and reproducible test steps.
- Work closely with systems engineering, software, network, cybersecurity, and test teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Perform regression testing following security-related changes, patches, configuration updates, or defect remediation.
- Support formal test events, customer demonstrations, acceptance testing, and technical reviews.
- Maintain traceability between security requirements, NIST controls, test procedures, results, and identified deficiencies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Hands-on system test experience involving advanced networking, VoIP, radio control equipment, and/or Air Traffic Management systems.
- Practical experience assessing or verifying NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 security controls.
- Experience with AC, CM, IA, SC, and SI control families.
- Strong understanding of networking concepts and protocols, including TCP/IP and secure network communications.
- Experience developing and executing formal test procedures and documenting results.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills.
- Ability to work across hardware, software, networking, and cybersecurity teams.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with FAA or other safety/mission-critical systems, Linux and Windows environments, network-analysis tools such as Wireshark, vulnerability/security testing tools, requirements traceability, Jira or similar defect-management systems, and formal FAT/SAT or customer acceptance testing would be highly desirable.
