Software Development Engineer II

Overview of Role:
Weyerhaeuser is seeking a trained Civil/Structural Engineer with interests in developing and delivering structural engineering software to the wood construction community. This role will actively define, develop, review, and test future engineering functionality within the Software Development Life Cycle as a member of a dynamic and experienced Software Development team. This opportunity marries Structural Engineering and Software Development career pathways. Successful candidates will possess strong structural engineering fundamentals, software development skills, and the ability to translate engineering methodologies, building code requirements, and product design standards into robust software solutions. The ideal candidate will have experience validating engineering software through exploratory testing, automated testing, engineering calculations, and technical documentation.

Requirements:

·        Assist in defining business and engineering requirements for new software functionality.

·        Develop, maintain, and document structural engineering methodologies used within engineering software platforms.

·        Interpret and implement design provisions from applicable building codes and engineering standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, NDS, NBCC, CSA O86, and related industry standards.

·        Develop engineering calculations and supporting documentation to validate software calculations and structural analysis results.

·        Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate engineering requirements, product needs, and industry standards into software solutions.

·        Design, develop, and implement new engineering functionality within existing software platforms.

·        Maintain and enhance existing software by resolving issues, implementing improvements, and refactoring code.

·        Participate in and lead code reviews to promote software quality, maintainability, and knowledge sharing.

·        Perform manual, exploratory, and regression testing of engineering software applications.

·        Develop, execute, and maintain test cases; document results and report software defects.

·        Track, advocate for, and verify resolution of software defects throughout the development lifecycle.

·        Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure appropriate testing coverage and product quality.

·        Communicate requirements, priorities, design decisions, and project status to stakeholders across Product Management, Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Software Development.

Education / Experience:

·        BS degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered.

Must have experience/skills:

·        Ability to read, analyze, and interpret applicable building codes and engineering standards.

·        Ability to design and develop engineering functionality within software development toolsets.

·        Experience with CAD software.

·        Ability to perform engineering calculation and validate technical results.

·        Strong understanding of mathematical concepts including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus.

·        Strong critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.

·        Ability to work effectively in situations involving ambiguity, incomplete information, and evolving requirements.

·        Ability to learn quickly, follow direction, take ownership of assignments, and collaborate effectively with others.

·        Ability to work independently in a hybrid or remote environment while managing multiple priorities.

·        Proven ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

·        Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have experience skills:

·        Experience with the construction, building products, or wood products industry.

·        Knowledge of Agile and Software Development Life Cycle.

·        Working knowledge of Microsoft development technologies, including Visual Studio, C#, VB.NET, SQL, and Azure DevOps.

·        Working knowledge of Automated Software Testing tools (UFT, FitNesse, Selenium).

·        Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Candidates actively pursuing engineering licensure will also be considered.

·        Experience developing, validating, or supporting structural engineering software applications.

·        Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants in professional software development workflows.
