Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Backend Data Engineer to design, build, and operate high-throughput backend systems and data platforms supporting telematics and connected vehicle applications.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Google Cloud Platform, Big Data, BigQuery, backend/API development, and AI/ML, along with a solid background in designing scalable real-time and batch data pipelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that process large volumes of telematics and connected vehicle data.
- Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines for high-volume vehicle event streams.
- Work with data such as GPS, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry.
- Design and optimize data processing and storage architectures using distributed computing technologies.
- Develop and optimize workloads on Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform).
- Design and optimize BigQuery datasets, SQL queries, partitioning, and clustering for performance and cost efficiency.
- Develop secure and scalable RESTful APIs, GraphQL, or gRPC services for internal and third-party integrations.
- Implement API security, authentication/authorization, versioning, and rate limiting.
- Build, train, and deploy machine learning models or rule-based systems supporting decision automation.
- Collaborate with engineering, data science, product, and business teams to deliver reliable data-driven solutions.
- Troubleshoot production performance, reliability, security, and cost-related issues.
- Apply software engineering best practices including TDD, CI/CD, database performance tuning, and API versioning.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 7+ years of IT experience with at least 5+ years of software development experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform for 3+ years, including services such as:
- Compute Engine
- Cloud Storage
- IAM
- VPC Networking
- Cloud Composer
- 3+ years of Big Data experience with technologies such as:
- Apache Spark
- Kafka
- Hadoop
- Dataflow
- Google Pub/Sub
- Strong understanding of distributed computing, data partitioning, data lakes, and data warehouse architectures.
- 3+ years of backend/API development experience with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, or gRPC.
- Experience with API security including OAuth2, API keys, authentication/authorization, versioning, and rate limiting.
- 2+ years of hands-on BigQuery experience, including optimized SQL, partitioning, clustering, and query/cost optimization.
- 1+ year of AI/ML or expert-system experience, with familiarity with technologies such as:
- TensorFlow
- PyTorch
- Vertex AI
- Strong programming experience in Java, Kotlin, Python, or another JVM/backend language.
- Experience designing and supporting production-grade, scalable backend/data systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with telematics, connected vehicles, automotive, IoT, fleet management, or vehicle data platforms.
- Experience with GKE/Kubernetes, Docker, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Build/CI/CD.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Bigtable, Kafka, or Pub/Sub.
- Experience integrating BigQuery with Looker, Data Studio, or other BI/reporting platforms.
- Knowledge of MLOps and data pipeline patterns.
- Experience with cloud cost optimization / FinOps.
- Strong database performance tuning experience.
