Rotating Equipment Repair Engineer
Jacksonville, FL
Full-Time | Onsite
P.E. License Not Required
The Opportunity
A specialized industrial repair organization is looking for a Rotating Equipment Repair Engineer to support complex repair projects involving heavy industrial and power-generation equipment.
This position is best suited for someone who has spent time around turbines and turbomachinery in an aftermarket repair environment and knows how to turn inspection findings into a practical repair plan. You will work closely with the shop throughout the process, helping determine what can be repaired, how it should be repaired, and what technical documentation is required to complete the job.
This is a shop-connected engineering position, not a traditional product-design role. You should be comfortable leaving the desk, walking the floor, examining components, talking through issues with machinists and technicians, and making engineering decisions based on the actual condition of the equipment.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Evaluate incoming rotating-equipment components and determine the appropriate repair approach.
- Review inspection findings, dimensions, drawings, specifications, previous repair records, and other available technical information.
- Develop practical repair instructions and technical scopes for damaged or worn components.
- Work alongside machining, welding, inspection, and assembly personnel as repairs progress.
- Provide engineering direction when the actual condition of a component differs from the expected condition.
- Determine whether components can be restored, modified, or require replacement.
- Investigate unusual component damage and contribute to failure/root-cause evaluations.
- Review completed repair documentation and engineering reports for technical accuracy.
- Research older equipment and locate usable technical information when original documentation is incomplete.
- Help establish repair methods for legacy turbines and other equipment where current OEM documentation may be limited.
- Provide technical input for repair quotations, estimates, and customer-facing discussions.
- Coordinate with field-service personnel when equipment arrives following a customer outage or field inspection.
- Serve as a technical resource to less-experienced engineering personnel when needed.
The Type of Experience That Fits
The strongest candidates will have experience repairing or engineering the repair of rotating equipment, rather than exclusively designing new equipment.
Relevant experience could include:
- Gas or steam turbine repair
- Turbine rotor repair
- Compressor repair
- Generator component repair
- Turbomachinery service
- Heavy rotating-equipment refurbishment
- Aftermarket power-generation equipment
- Industrial machinery repair
Experience with equipment from major turbine manufacturers is valuable, particularly when combined with hands-on aftermarket repair experience.
What Matters Most
1. You understand repair disposition.
You can look at an inspected component and determine what is wrong, what needs to be done, and whether the component can realistically be restored.
2. You understand the shop.
You can communicate effectively with machinists, welders, inspectors, and technicians and understand how an engineering decision translates into an actual machining or restoration process.
3. You're resourceful with older equipment.
Not every project will come with a complete package of current drawings and OEM documentation. You need to be comfortable researching historical information and developing a technically defensible repair approach.
4. You can document your decisions.
The role requires clear repair scopes, technical instructions, inspection documentation, and engineering reports.
Work Environment
You'll be working in a hands-on industrial repair facility supporting equipment as it moves through inspection, repair, machining, restoration, and final assembly.
The position involves regular interaction with shop personnel and requires an engineer who is comfortable being involved in the physical repair process rather than operating exclusively from an office.
Backgrounds That May Translate Well
Candidates may come from:
- Turbine aftermarket/service organizations
- Independent turbomachinery repair companies
- Power-generation equipment service companies
- Heavy industrial repair facilities
- Rotating-equipment service organizations
- Industrial machine shops with significant turbine or turbomachinery work
- OEM service organizations with substantial repair/disposition experience
Potentially relevant titles include Rotating Equipment Engineer, Repair Engineer, Turbine Engineer, Turbine Repair Specialist, Service Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Turbomachinery Engineer, or Senior Repair Specialist.
A highly experienced technical professional from a rotating-equipment repair environment may also be considered if they have the engineering judgment and documentation skills required for the position.
Education & Credentials
A P.E. license is not required.
The priority is demonstrated knowledge of rotating equipment, inspection, repair methodology, and aftermarket repair execution.
