The Control-M Batch Automation, Recovery, and Scripting Contractor will support overnight batch-processing operations for a data center in Long Beach, California, through an initial two- to three-month contract. This role will reduce manual overnight intervention by designing, testing, and implementing safe, controlled automation using BMC Control-M and related scripting tools. The contractor will collaborate with application support teams and data center staff to automate recovery, notification, escalation, validation, and auditability across Windows, Linux, and mainframe environments. The position is remote but requires local availability for occasional office visits.

Key Responsibilities
- Review current overnight batch processes, operator procedures, and recovery runbooks.
- Identify failure scenarios that currently require overnight manual intervention.
- Document current response procedures and decision logic for each scenario.
- Determine which scenarios can be fully automated, partially automated, or require human intervention.
- Design, develop, test, and implement approved Control-M recovery automation.
- Create and modify Control-M jobs, schedules, dependencies, conditions, variables, and recovery logic.
- Develop automation to detect failed, delayed, or stalled batch jobs.
- Configure automated retries or job restarts when appropriate.
- Hold downstream jobs when prerequisite processing fails.
- Restart services or processes when required.
- Validate return codes, files, logs, database conditions, and other indicators before continuing processing.
- Configure escalation procedures when automated recovery is unsuccessful.
- Develop clear alerts and notifications for application support and data center teams.
- Establish retry limits and safeguards to prevent duplicate or unintended processing.
- Maintain an audit trail of automated actions and recovery attempts.
- Provide mechanisms to stop, override, or manually control automation when necessary.
- Troubleshoot production batch failures and support recovery activities.
- Develop automated health checks and validation routines.
- Translate operational procedures and runbooks into reliable automated workflows.
- Prepare technical documentation, operating procedures, and support materials.
- Coordinate testing, implementation, change management, and production rollout activities.
- Test automation across applicable Windows, Linux, and mainframe environments.
- Validate that automation does not create duplicate processing or unintended job execution.
- Document implemented workflows, recovery logic, support procedures, and known limitations.
- Support production implementation and resolve issues identified during testing or deployment.
- Provide knowledge transfer to application support and data center staff.
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong hands-on experience with BMC Control-M in a production environment.
- Experience creating and modifying Control-M jobs, schedules, dependencies, conditions, variables, and recovery logic.
- Experience developing and troubleshooting Control-M workflows across Windows, Linux, and mainframe environments.
- Experience managing cross-platform job dependencies, recovery processes, and batch automation.
- Strong scripting and batch automation experience across Windows, Linux, and mainframe environments.
- Experience designing automated retry, restart, failure-handling, and escalation processes.
- Proven experience troubleshooting production batch failures.
- Experience configuring Control-M alerts, notifications, and exception handling.
- Strong understanding of upstream and downstream job dependencies.
- Experience implementing safeguards to prevent repeated retries, duplicate processing, or inappropriate job continuation.
- Working knowledge of SQL, file-based processing, and secure file transfer.
- Strong documentation, communication, and production support skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with application support and data center teams.
- Ability to start immediately and support project activities as required.
Preferred (Optional):
- Experience supporting payroll, financial, or other business-critical batch processing environments.
- Experience with Control-M Automation API or other programmatic Control-M capabilities.
- Experience integrating Control-M with APIs, monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, ticketing and incident management systems such as ServiceNow, or notification platforms.
- Experience automating recovery and escalation workflows.
- Experience developing automated health checks and validation routines.
- Experience managing batch scripts and automation logic through formal version control and change management processes.
- Ability to track revisions and restore prior versions when necessary.
- Experience working with formal production change, release, and incident management procedures.

Additional Details
The base range for this contract position is $58- $68 / per hour, depending on experience. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hires of this position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
