Position: Fleet Engineer

Location: Minneapolis, MN Onsite

Type of Employment: 12+ Months Contract

Role Description:

4+ years of experience managing Linux-based edge device fleets.
Hands-on experience with fleet management tools like BalenaCloud, balenaCLI, metropolis and container-based deployments
Strong experience with Docker containers and Docker Compose
CI/CD pipeline implementation using tools such as GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins
Container image build, optimization, and deployment practices
Version control using Git
Strong Linux administration skills (Ubuntu, Debian, Raspberry Pi OS)
Device troubleshooting, remote diagnostics, and log analysis
Shell scripting (Bash)
Network configuration and security for remote edge devices
Python for automation, deployment tools, and monitoring
API integration and automation scripting

Good-to-Have

Experience integrating edge devices with cloud platforms such as:
Azure IoT
AWS IoT
Google Cloud IoT
Understanding of VPNs, firewalls, proxies, and secure communications
Familiarity with MQTT, REST APIs, WebSockets
Air-gapped/offline deployment strategies
Kubernetes/K3s at the edge
Device security, certificate management, and secure boot
Observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack)
Experience with ARM-based devices (Raspberry Pi, Jetson, etc.)

Responsibility of / Expectations from the Role

Provision, configure, and onboard edge devices into BalenaCloud fleets.
Manage device lifecycle activities including registration, updates, maintenance, and decommissioning.
Deploy and monitor containerized applications across distributed edge device fleets.
Configure fleet-wide environment variables, device settings, and application releases.
Plan and execute OTA (Over-the-Air) software and firmware updates with minimal operational disruption.
