About the OpportunityResource Consulting Engineers (RCE) is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its growing MEP consulting team in the Ames/Des Moines, Iowa or Omaha, Nebraska area.
This is a hands-on engineering and project leadership role for a mechanical engineer with significant experience designing building systems within an MEP consulting engineering and/or A/E design firm.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead mechanical design efforts, work directly with clients and architects, coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, and support projects within the education, government, healthcare, and institutional markets.
Responsibilities- Lead mechanical/HVAC design for commercial and institutional building projects.
- Design HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and related mechanical building systems.
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations, equipment sizing, and system selection.
- Develop mechanical construction documents and specifications using Autodesk Revit.
- Lead projects from conceptual design through construction administration.
- Evaluate existing mechanical systems for renovations, additions, and facility upgrades.
- Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, architectural, structural, and other disciplines.
- Work directly with architects, owners, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Review contractor submittals and shop drawings.
- Respond to RFIs and provide engineering support throughout construction.
- Participate in site visits, field observations, and existing-condition assessments.
- Manage project schedules, deliverables, and client expectations.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
- Contribute to the continued growth of RCE's mechanical engineering practice.
Required QualificationsCandidates should meet all of the following requirements:
- 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
- 5+ years of experience working for an MEP consulting engineering firm and/or A/E design firm.
- Demonstrated experience designing mechanical/MEP systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
- Project experience within education, government, and/or healthcare markets.
- Extensive hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit for building systems design and construction documents.
- Strong experience with HVAC and mechanical building systems design.
- Experience performing load calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing.
- Knowledge of applicable mechanical, energy, and building codes.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work on-site from the Ames/Des Moines, IA or Omaha, NE area.
Preferred Qualifications- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Iowa or Nebraska, or ability to obtain appropriate licensure through reciprocity.
- Experience leading mechanical design projects from concept through construction.
- K-12, higher education, healthcare, municipal, or government facility experience.
- Experience with central plant, hydronic, geothermal, or other complex HVAC systems.
- Experience with renovation, addition, and new-construction projects.
- Knowledge of energy-efficient and sustainable building design.
- Client-facing project management experience.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and designers.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate has built their career within an MEP consulting or architecture/engineering firm, designing mechanical systems for commercial and institutional buildings.
They have significant hands-on Revit experience and a strong background in HVAC and building mechanical systems. They are comfortable taking ownership of projects, coordinating directly with architects and clients, and supporting projects throughout design and construction.
Candidates whose experience is primarily in manufacturing, product design, automotive, industrial equipment, or other non-building mechanical engineering disciplines will generally not align with this position.

Salary Description
$140,000 - $160,000
