Senior Sourcing Engineer driving end-to-end sourcing strategies across our Global Tier1 Contract Manufacturing. This role enables impact through supplier leadership, category strategy ownership, and cross-functional partnership from concept through end-of-life.
Microsoft Devices Operations (MDO) is seeking a Sourcing Engineer with deep expertise in contract manufacturing and ODM services, broad supply chain knowledge, and experience across the full product development lifecycle. The role regularly engages senior executives, requiring business acumen, strategic thinking, and deep industry insight.
The successful candidate will develop category strategies, lead product negotiations and supplier relationships, and build a mature supply base that delivers competitive cost, quality, resilience, and technology outcomes across Microsoft Devices hardware. They apply logical analysis, evaluates alternatives, adapts to change, plans strategically, and communicates effectively to guide cross-functional teams. Quantitative and qualitative assessment skills are essential to maximizing impact.

Responsibilities- Develop and execute differentiated sourcing strategies for assigned products, using leading global manufacturing service providers to deliver competitive cost, quality, innovation, supply continuity, and lifecycle performance.
- Own business performance for assigned product categories across the full lifecycle, leading supplier selection, commercial negotiations, contracting, relationship management, performance improvement, and capability development in partnership with Product Development and Devices Operations.
- Set clear priorities, resolve execution barriers, and hold Tier 1 suppliers accountable through measurable commitments, performance reviews, and corrective action plans aligned with Microsoft standards and business objectives.
- Develop and maintain transparent, predictable, and competitive cost models using should-cost analysis, benchmarking, and cost-driver insights; lead cost-reduction plans and manage total cost of ownership throughout the product lifecycle.
- Generate competitive supplier, technology, and market intelligence to identify emerging capabilities, capacity constraints, cost trends, and geopolitical supply risks, and translate these insights into category roadmaps and sourcing decisions.
- Identify and mitigate supply continuity, capacity, financial, compliance, geopolitical, and operational risks by developing supplier resilience plans, recovery actions, and business continuity strategies.
- Lead change initiatives to improve sourcing efficiency, decision quality, and supplier performance by standardizing repeatable processes, simplifying workflows, eliminating duplicate work, and building organizational capability.
- Partner with Engineering, Quality, Operations, Finance, Legal, and Sourcing teams to align category roadmaps, supplier selection, commercial decisions, launch readiness, production execution, and end-of-life transitions. Establish transparent governance, decision ownership, and operating rhythms to maintain strategic and operational alignment.
QualificationsRequired/Minimum Qualifications:- Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles.
- OR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 4+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles.
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:- Deep industry knowledge relevant for Tier1 Contract Manufacturing in the consumer electronics industry.
- Demonstrated experience in market analysis to dissect market size, players, customers, growth, technology replacements/forecasts, pricing trends, etc., to formulate sourcing strategies.
- Experience in delivering best in class total cost of ownership (TCO), continuity of supply (COS), and in building partnerships.
- Expertise in financial statement analysis to derive should-cost models and cost competitiveness/financial strengths of suppliers before RFx is conducted.
- Combination of business and technical knowledge base, particularly for assigned categories.
- Project/timeline (Consumer Electronics Integrated Project Management) adherence experiences.
- Ability to articulate points of view with executive management but execute plans when directed.
- Proficient in mastering Microsoft systems and processes, and adept at synthesizing diverse perspectives to drive effective action and execution.
- Passionate about opportunities to establish new approach to sourcing.
- Ability to communicate and think strategically to support ideology with facts.

Sourcing Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
