Microsoft Purview Engineer / Analyst

Role Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Microsoft Purview Engineer / Analyst to support the implementation, configuration, and ongoing administration of enterprise data cataloging, classification, lineage, and governance capabilities within an Azure environment.
This role will work closely with the Microsoft Purview Technical Lead, database teams, Cloud Operations, data owners, and data stewards to configure Purview, onboard data sources, maintain metadata, troubleshoot scans, and support governance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and configure Microsoft Purview accounts, collections, Data Map structures, domains, and collection hierarchies.
- Register Azure, on-premises, database, storage, reporting, and other in-scope data sources.
- Configure scan targets, scan rulesets, full and incremental schedules, automated classifications, and sensitivity labels.
- Configure and maintain secrets, service accounts, and scanning credentials using Azure Key Vault.
- Support the registration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the Self-Hosted Integration Runtime.
- Monitor scan health and resolve connectivity, credential, permission, classification, and ingestion failures.
- Tune scan schedules and configurations to minimize impact on production databases and systems.
- Enrich technical metadata and work with business stakeholders to document business metadata.
- Build, maintain, and align the Microsoft Purview business glossary with cataloged data assets.
- Configure, validate, and document automated and manual data lineage.
- Support the development and maintenance of the data catalog and data dictionary.
- Implement Purview roles, collection-level permissions, RBAC, and persona-based access.
- Maintain a living repository of data-source owners, stewards, access rights, and edit permissions.
- Support metadata validation, catalog quality reviews, glossary approvals, and ongoing stewardship activities.
- Develop and maintain configuration runbooks, operational runbooks, scan execution playbooks, and failure matrices.
- Deliver training and knowledge transfer to Purview administrators, data owners, and data stewards.
- Support weekly status reporting, issue tracking, risk management, and governance-process approvals.
- Document completed work, open issues, dependencies, technical decisions, and remediation actions.
Required Experience
- Hands-on experience implementing, configuring, or administering Microsoft Purview.
- Experience registering data sources and configuring collections, scans, rulesets, classifications, glossary terms, and lineage.
- Working knowledge of Azure, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, managed identities, service principals, and RBAC.
- Experience working with databases, schemas, tables, data platforms, metadata, and data cataloging.
- Experience configuring or supporting Self-Hosted Integration Runtime.
- Ability to troubleshoot data-source connectivity, credential, access, and scan failures.
- Experience documenting technical configurations, processes, issues, and operational procedures.
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Experience working within an Agile delivery environment using Azure DevOps.
Preferred Experience
- Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Purview, data engineering, or data governance certifications.
- Experience working in government or regulated environments.
- Familiarity with enterprise data governance, metadata management, data classification, and stewardship practices.
- Experience working with Azure SQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Power BI, Azure Data Lake, Synapse, or similar data platforms.
