Position Overview
The Senior Looker BI & Semantic Engineer will direct the complete modernization and rationalization of DLA’s data reporting, visualization, and dashboard tier. This position is responsible for orchestrating the mass migration of 10,000+ legacy self-service applications and dashboards currently residing in Qlik Sense Enterprise (QCA) and legacy SAP Business Objects (WebI/Crystal Reports) over to a standardized enterprise footprint on Looker.
You will build out a centrally governed, trusted semantic model that breaks down existing command silos, implementing custom interactive data products directly for warfighter and senior leadership briefing layers.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
● Enterprise Semantic Modeling (LookML): Develop, optimize, and maintain scalable, high-performance LookML models (Views, Explores, Manifest files) to establish a single, trusted "source of truth" metric layer, completely eliminating unmanaged "shadow IT" file and manual calculation loops.
● Qlik App & Script Deconstruction: Analyze complex legacy Qlik visual frameworks, nested load scripts, and localized data products (QVD file streams) to refactor them into standardized BigQuery data products or optimized Looker model lookups.
● Looker Explore Self-Service Enablement: Engineer highly intuitive Looker Explores to empower DLA analysts and operations researchers to safely perform complex, ad-hoc ad-join data queries on the fly, directly reducing the agency''s historic overhead for pre-canned custom report generation.
● Bespoke Visualizations & Iframe Embeddings: Architect robust dashboard experiences tailored for senior executive briefings. Integrate highly customized dashboard visual templates (such as advanced D3.js configurations) and coordinate with application developers to embed Looker assets securely inside the centralized Angular/MEAN-stack Enterprise Dashboard using secure iframe token integrations.
● Performance Tuning via BI Engine: Maximize workspace responsiveness and dashboard load speed across high-concurrency windows (up to 800 parallel business users) by sizing and fine-tuning BigQuery BI Engine memory reservations and caching allocations.
Required Technical Qualifications
● Looker Suite Platform Expertise: Advanced, deep-dive development experience inside Looker (Core Looker/Looker Studio Pro), with expert knowledge of LookML development, version gating via Git, and deployment tracking.
● Bespoke UI/UX Integration: Experience handling web visual assets and javascript charts (e.g., D3.js, HTML5 canvas) for embedded web properties.
● Data Layer Familiarity: Excellent command of SQL query composition and understanding of modern Cloud Data Lakehouse concepts (e.g., querying clustered/partitioned BigQuery structures).
● Certifications: Looker LookML Developer certification or Google Cloud Certified Professional Data Engineer; Must maintain DoD 8570 baseline compliance (e.g., Security+ CE)
