Job Summary
Position Description
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) invites applications for faculty positions in Systems Engineering (SYSE) at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank. Qualified candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and the potential to develop an externally funded research program. Applicants at the Associate or Full Professor level must demonstrate a strong record of scholarly and professional achievements.
The appointment commences for the fall 2027 semester.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A PhDdegree or equivalent in Systems Engineering, or a related discipline such as Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics is required prior to employment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Education and Experience: We are seeking candidates whose teaching and research interests span one or more of the fundamental areas of industrial and systems engineering, including systems architecture, manufacturing, systems management, risk management, requirements engineering, and robotics and mechatronics. A full professor appointment is expected to be made in robotics and mechatronics. Exceptionally strong candidates with research and teaching interests in other fields of systems engineering will also be considered, including modeling and simulation, control systems, systems integration, optimization, and system design.
The Department and School
The SYSE Department currently has twelve tenured/tenure-track, lecturer, and research faculty members, and approximately 100 graduate students, working in diverse areas including high-precision mechatronic systems with applications in atomic-scale lithography, atomically precise manufacturing and high-speed scanning probe microscopy; robotic systems and control in a variety of multidisciplinary applications; modeling, analysis and control of multiagent systems; complex networks; graph machine learning for network control applications, resilience and security in networked multiagent systems, transportation systems management and operation strategies, mathematical methods for complex networks and engineering applications. Faculty members typically hold affiliate positions in other engineering departments and advise doctoral students in those departments.
The SYSE Department at UT Dallas is at a crossroads in its evolution, until recently having a single graduate degree program and complementary focus in research. The fall semester 2025 saw the start of a new, multidisciplinary undergraduate degree program in Systems Engineering, representing an exciting opportunity for new faculty hires. SYSE currently offers an M.S. degree in Systems Engineering and Management, a joint program with the Jindal School of Management. Plans for a new doctoral program in Systems Engineering, as well as a new MS degree in Robotics are at an advanced stage. The undergraduate curriculum is expressly tailored to meet the needs of modern systems engineers, providing pathways for students to select a secondary field in another discipline, such as mechanical, electrical, bioengineering, computer science, or management. To support growth and expansion to the planned undergraduate degree program, UT Dallas has committed to expanding the SYSE faculty where needed.
In addition to Systems Engineering, the Erik Johnson School is home to the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering and Material Science & Engineering with interdisciplinary programs in Computer, Telecommunications and Software Engineering.
The University of Texas at Dallas is situated in Richardson, one of the most attractive suburbs of the Dallas metropolitan area with several hundred high-tech and business systems companies within a few miles of the campus, including Texas Instruments, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Lennox, Rockwell-Collins, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, Fujitsu, Cisco Systems, EDS, Toyota, Capital One, State Farm, and Zyvex Labs. Opportunities for joint university-industry research projects are excellent. The Erik Jonsson School has experienced rapid growth for the last dozen years. As a result of increased funding and continued growth of the university, the school is expanding its existing programs, establishing new programs, and recruiting outstanding faculty.
Application Instructions
Applicants should upload the following:
Full curriculum vitae and cover letter summarizing their interests and qualifications for the position.
Statement of teaching philosophy describing their conceptualizations of teaching and learning, and teaching and assessment methods, and how their teaching practices will engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Research statement describing past, present, and future research, including how they mentor (or will mentor) student researchers and foster (or will foster) collaborative research environments.
A writing/publication sample; and
Full contact information for at least three academic or professional references.
Priority will be given to completed applications received by December 1, 2026. Reviews will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed on May 30, 2027.
