Chemistry Scientist 2 Large Molecule / Drug Substance Scientist
Duration: 09/21/2026 12/31/2026 (possibility of extension)
Location: Spring House, PA (100% onsite)
Pay Rate: $39.71/hr
Role Overview
We are seeking a Chemistry Scientist 2 to support Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) process development activities focused on large-molecule / drug substance purification for biologics (including antibodies).
The successful candidate will design, execute, and analyze laboratory-scale experiments to support upstream and downstream purification development of biologic drug substances. Responsibilities include process characterization studies involving liquid chromatography, concentration/filtration operations, and related unit operations. The role emphasizes the application of scaled-down models representative of commercial processes, data interpretation to guide process decisions, and contribution to process instructions and process validation readiness.
Approximately 90% of the work is hands-on experimental. The candidate will prepare solutions, handle samples, execute workflows, collect/record/interpret data, present findings internally, write technical documents, and help train/mentor colleagues on techniques and equipment. The individual will also stay current with scientific advances and help introduce relevant new concepts or technologies into the workflow. Collaboration in a cross-functional team environment is expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and perform process development and characterization experiments supporting novel biologics purification.
- Execute studies on liquid chromatography, solution concentration (e.g., SP-TFF, UF/DF), and filtration operations.
- Apply reduced-scale models and support Process Analytical Technology (PAT) approaches.
- Prepare solutions, perform sample handling/submission, and maintain accurate documentation/notebooks.
- Interpret analytical data to inform purification strategies and process decisions.
- Contribute to Designs of Experiments (DOE) and innovation efforts related to protein/large-molecule purification and analysis.
- Write technical memos and present data at internal meetings.
- Train and mentor others on relevant techniques and equipment as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor s, Master s, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline, with relevant industry experience (typically 4+ years with BS, 2+ years with MS, or 1+ year with Ph.D.).
- Hands-on experience with liquid chromatography systems (e.g., Protein A, CEX, AEX) experience on systems such as KTA Pure or KTA Avant strongly preferred.
- Experience with large-molecule / biologics drug substance manufacturing processes (antibodies preferred).
- Knowledge and practical experience with biologics solution concentration techniques (SP-TFF and UF/DF).
- Experience with filtration operations and sample submission workflows.
- Strong documentation and laboratory notebook skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with protein purification and characterization using common analytical methods (e.g., A280, SEC, Raman, NIR, ProG, etc.).
- Experience with filter sizing (depth, sterile, nano filtration) and resin lifetime studies.
- Familiarity with GMP processes.
- Strong technical writing, oral presentation, and cross-functional teamwork skills.
Top Non-Negotiable Skills
- Hands-on experience with downstream biotherapeutic manufacturing operations, particularly Protein A chromatography.
- Proven experience with biologics solution concentration (SP-TFF / UF/DF) and filtration.
- Strong laboratory documentation / notebook skills and ability to work independently in a process-development setting.
This is a fully onsite laboratory role focused on practical process development support for large-molecule drug substance. Candidates must be authorized to work in the location and available for the full assignment duration.
