Position Summary
The Tax Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and completing tax engagements while maintaining a high standard of technical accuracy and client service. This individual will prepare and review complex tax returns, oversee engagement workflows, supervise staff, and communicate important developments to firm leadership.
The position requires the ability to manage multiple engagements, resolve tax and accounting issues, and identify opportunities to provide additional value to clients.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance and Technical Review
Prepare and review complex federal, state, and local tax returns.
Review workpapers and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with professional standards.
Research tax matters and remain current on relevant changes in tax law.
Apply sound judgment to tax, accounting, and financial reporting matters.
Prepare client correspondence, reports, financial statement footnotes, and other engagement-related documentation.
Identify tax planning strategies and communicate potential opportunities to firm leadership and clients.
Engagement Management
Plan, supervise, and complete tax engagements from initial scheduling through final delivery.
Coordinate engagement timelines, staff assignments, budgets, and deadlines.
Monitor engagement progress and staff productivity against established work plans.
Review completed work, resolve technical or workflow issues, and communicate significant developments to firm leadership.
Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously while maintaining quality and responsiveness.
Assist with client billing and other engagement administration as needed.
Team Leadership and Development
Lead, train, and mentor staff and senior accountants.
Provide clear instructions regarding engagement responsibilities and expected work quality.
Review team members' work and direct revisions when necessary.
Provide timely, constructive feedback and contribute to employee development and performance discussions.
Promote consistent application of firm policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Help create an environment that supports collaboration, accountability, and continued learning.
Client Service
Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients.
Provide timely, accurate, and responsive service that meets or exceeds client expectations.
Maintain clear communication with clients and internal engagement teams.
Assist clients with tax planning, compliance questions, and special projects.
Recognize opportunities to expand services based on client needs.
Support the development of new and existing client relationships.
Firm Support
Assist firm leadership with administrative or operational responsibilities as assigned.
Participate in recruiting, training, and developing accounting professionals.
Contribute to internal process improvements and practice development initiatives.
Maintain proficiency with firm technology, including tax preparation, engagement management, time and billing, spreadsheet, and document-processing software.
Participate in professional or community activities when appropriate.
Perform additional responsibilities based on client and firm needs.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a closely related field.
CPA license or active progress toward CPA licensure preferred.
Approximately five or more years of progressive public accounting experience.
Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing complex tax returns.
Experience supervising, reviewing, or mentoring accounting professionals.
Strong understanding of federal and state tax compliance and planning concepts.
Ability to manage multiple engagements, deadlines, and client priorities simultaneously.
Proficiency with tax preparation, accounting, engagement management, and Microsoft Office applications.
Strong written, verbal, analytical, and organizational skills.
Ability to exercise professional judgment and work with limited supervision.
